SMS Medical College was established in Jaipur, Rajasthan in the year 1947. This is the oldest college in RAJASTHAN and one of the premier medical college of India. The college has been conducting its activities with a common objective of imparting healthy medical education & research as well as providing state of art treatment to the needy people of the state.

The college has a total of 32 departments and eight hospitals attached to it. The college has separate hostel facilities for the male & female students & residents. The college offers Under Graduate, Post Graduate, Diploma, M.Ch.,DM, M.Sc (Med), PhD, and Nursing courses with various disciplines of medicine and allied sciences:-

• Apart from that, the college offers some Diplomas courses like DA, DGD, DMRD, DPH, DMRT, DTCD, as well.

HISTORY
One hospital and one dispensary were started in 1845. Subsequently, such facilities were recommended for other parts of the state as well. However, due to lack of trained doctors the initiative with limited success, In 1855, a maternity hospital and one dispensary and a medical school were opened in Jaipur, inaugurated on 7th September, 1861 and in the first batch 24 students were admitted.

Dr. Kingford Burr was appointed as director of this college and he used to teach material medical, practical therapeutics, surgery and practice of medicine. Later, Dr.Najeeb Khan and Dr. Hussain Baksh were appointed as demonstrator in anatomy and assistant surgeon Parvati Charan Gosh was appointed as lecturer to teach principles and practice of medicine, Physiology and materia medica.

Three year later (1861-64) over differences certain unfortunate developments led to closure of the medical school which was still in its infancy. In 1945, late Sir Mirza Ismail, prime minister of Jaipur state, during his visit to Sikar, was invited for tea by Late Rao Raja Kalian Singh of Sikar at his guest house. Incidentally, the chief medical officer, Dr. S. C. Mehta was also one of the invitees. During discussions, Dr. Mehta pointed out that doctors coming from other states leave the services as soon as they get suitable jobs in their parent states and hence there was always a shortage of doctors.

The solution which he recommended was establishing a medical college in our own state. Sir Mirza then started working on this project. On March 13th, 1946 Lord Wavell laid the foundation-stone of SMS college in a very impressive function presided over by H.H.Sawai Man Singh, the Maharaja of Jaipur.

The year 1947 marked the beginning of a new era in medical education in Rajasthan with the inception of the 15th centre for medical education in India , the prestigious Sawai Man Singh Medical College , Initially, the college started work in the south wing of SMS Hospital and in the building of the Jaipur Medical Association. Dr. G.N.Sen was its first principal. He had a short tenure and was succeeded by Dr. S.C.Mehta, famous for his great zeal, drive and sense of discipline. His acumen in choosing his staff reflected in selection of Dr. H.C.Choudhary, first professor of Physiology, and Dr.B.M.Lal, first professor of anatomy, both of whom were loved and admired by their students.

Professor Ram Bihari Arora and professor R.K.Goel were the fortunate ones to head the department of pharmacology and pathology respectively. In 1951, Dr. S.K.Menon took over as principal of the college .In 1952, the college was recognized by the Medical Council of India and the foundation of a new OPD block was laid in the succeeding year. 1952 also marked the beginning of P.G Courses and the first batch of M.D. and M.S. students qualified in 1955.

MBBS Course
There are 150 admissions to MBBS course every year in the college. The admissions are on the basis of merit with constitutional reservations, done by the centralized process by Govt. of Rajasthan. The break up of seats is 15% by DGHS though All India PMT of all seats. The course structure and content is set according to the guidelines laid down by the Medical Council of India. It consists of 9 semesters each of 6 months duration. The first 2 semesters are devoted to the pre-clinical subjects - Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry and after this period of 12 months the 1st Professor essional examination is held. The maximum marks are 200 for each subject.

In the next 3 semesters, the student studies and is examined in Pathology (150 marks), Microbiology (150 marks), Pharmacology (150 marks) and Forensic Medicine (100 marks). During this period he is also introduced to the clinical subjects through lectures and clinical postings by rotation. During the last 4 semesters, the students studies only the clinical subjects Internal Medicine including Cardiology and Neurology, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Psychiatry, Dermatology and Community Medicine through lectures, demonstrations and clinical postings. The final professional examination is held in two parts. Part-1 is held at the end of the 7th semester and includes the subjects of Community Medicine, Ophthalmology & Otorhinolaryngology .

At the end of the nine semester the part-2 of the final professional examination is held in Internal Medicine, Surgery & orthopedics, Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynecology. Examinations in the clinical subjects includes written, clinical and oral parts. According to the Medical Council of India, a candidate must have atleast 75% attendance in clinical postings and lectures and also have secured atleast 35% marks in the internal assesment to be eligible to be appear in the professional examination.

SELECTION OF POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS
Students for Postgraduate medical courses shall be selected strictly on the basis of their academic merit.

Candidates are eligible for entrance to these courses after completing Internship. The number of seats in each course is decided from time to time.On the basis of merit as determined by the competitive test conducted by the State Government or by the competent authority appointed by the State Government or by the university/group of universities in the same state;

On the basis of merit as determined by a centralized competitive test held at the national level; or Provided that wherever entrance test for Postgraduate admission is held by the State Government or a university or any other authorized examining body, the minimum percentage of marks for eligibility for admission to postgraduate medical courses shall be fifty per cent for general category candidates and 40 per cent for the candidate belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward classes.

PERIOD OF TRAINING:
The period of training for the award of various postgraduate degrees or diplomas shall be as follows:

Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) / Master of Surgery (M.S.)

The period of training for obtaining these degrees shall be three completed years including the period of examination. Provided that in the case of students having a recognised two year postgraduate diploma course in the same subject, the period of training, including the period of examination, shall be two year.

Course content and structure are as directed by Medical Council of India. Resident doctors receive hands on training in emergencies pertaining to that speciality, outpatient and inpatient management (including diagnosis and treatment), ward procedures, teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates and community services. Surgical residents are trained in the principles of surgery and actually operate under supervision.

During the 3 year period, the student also does research and writes a thesis. Application for registration of the thesis topic can be made 12 months after admission to the course. A student is eligible to appear at the MD or MS examination provided he/she has obtained the MBBS degree, has completed 12 months Internship and subsequently put in 3 years continuous work as junior resident in the department concerned. The MD / MS degree shall be conferred on the candidate after acceptance of his/her thesis and after passing the prescribed MD / MS examination. The examination consists of written, clinical (or practical) and oral parts.

EXAMINATIONS
The examinations shall be organised on the basis of grading or marking system to evaluate and certify candidate level of knowledge, skill and competence at the end of the training and obtaining a minimum of 50% marks in theory as well as practical separately shall be mandatory for passing the whole examination. The examination for M.S., M.D., D.M., M.Ch., shall be held at the end of 3 academic years (six academic terms) and for diploma at the end of 2 academic years (four academic terms). The academic terms shall mean six months training period.
