In 1938, the nucleus of the Alexandria University had its beginning in the form of two satellite faculties of Fouad the First University. These were the faculties of Arts and Law. The faculty of Engineering was then established in 1941.

In the light of the need for developing more disciplines for higher learning and with a view towards meeting the need of the people of Alexandria, Alexandria University, formerly known as Farouk University, became a separate entity in August 1942 with four additional faculties: Science, Commerce, Medicine and Agriculture.

In 1952, it became "Alexandria University". Since then, the University witnessed growth and expansion in several fields: the number of Faculties and high institutes increased to 30. Some example of them are as follows:

Alexandria University supervised the establishment of four satellite faculties in the Nile Delta. Those were: Faculty of Medicine in 1962 and Faculties of Science (1969) in Tanta (currently Tanta University), Education and Agriculture in 1969 in Kafr-Elsheikh (currently Kafr-Elsheikh University), which composed the nucleus of Tanta University.

Seven other Faculties were established in Damanhour, the capital of Behera Governorate: the Faculty of Education (1980), the Faculties of Arts, Agriculture, and Commerce (1983), and, very recently, three new Faculties: Science, Veterinary Medicine, and Nursing (2007).

In 1989, the Faculties and Institute affiliated to Helwan University and located in Alexandria joined the University by a Presidential Decree: four Faculties of Physical Education for men, Physical Education for women, fine Arts, and agriculture at Saba-Basha.

A Faculty of Basic Education was also established in 1991 in Marsa-Matrouh Governorate, 300 Km west of Alexandria. In 1998, two Faculties affiliated to the ministry of Higher Education, joined the University: Kindergarten Teachers Training, and Specific Education.

Believing in its role towards Arab and African countries, Alexandria University established in 1960 in Beirut, Lebanon, "Beirut Arab University" which is run and supervised by educational and administrative cadres from Alexandria University. Very recently, Alexandria University is working on the establishment of a branch in Juba, south of Sudan, and in N'djamena in Tchad.

Therefore, in addition to creation, preservation, transmission and application of knowledge through teaching, research and creative works, the mission of Alexandria University is to contribute to the society through the pursuit of education, learning, and research at the highest international levels of excellence.

UNIVERSITY HEAD ADMINISTRATION

Alexandria University is administered through the l headed by the University President,who is appointed by a Presidential decree and with the membership of: four Vice-Presidents; appointed by the Prime Minister's degree, Deans of all the Faculties and Institutes of the University, and four members with expertise on university education; appointed for two years liable to extension, after a resolution taken by the University President and after members of the Council state their opinion. The Secretary General of the University attends all Council meetings as Secretary of these sessions and takes part in the discussions.

The President runs the University academically and administratively according to the bylaws and the regulations approved by the Supreme Council of Universities. He serves as the Chief Executive and Operational Officer of the University, and is directly responsible of the management of all University affairs to the University council, the Supreme Council of Universities, and the Ministry of Higher Education. The President may delegate responsibility or authority to other Council members, or individuals in the University community.

Administration of Alexandria University is done through the main offices including the President Office, the 3 Vice-Presidents Offices and the Damanhour Branch office.

Faculty and Staff

The Alexandria University faculty instructs undergraduate and graduate students, and engages in research. There are 6,272 faculty members (professors of all ranks). As of October 2010, the Universitys total teaching staff includes: Alexandria University employs about 18,498 individuals on campus. In addition to faculty, there are research, library, and administrative staff, as well as many others who directly or indirectly support the teaching and research goals of the Institute. Student Union

The Alexandria University Students Union is considered one of the most important institutions. Through various activities, the students can add to their knowledge and acquire considerable potentials that prepare them to contribute to society. This forms a reliable complement to the educational process. The Students Union Council is elected to organize cultural, social, sports and recreational activities. The Union has its own budget and offers numerous services to the students, aided by officials from the University Welfare Office.

Health Care Services
Health Service Alexandria University hospitals and clinics provide a complete range of free preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic services. Health service is now at a very high standard through the newly developed University hospital (over 200 beds) which is well equipped and staffed with highly qualified specialists.

Out-patient clinics are conveniently located on campus and provide medical services to thousands of students, staff members and University administrators. Cases which need further medical or surgical attention are usually referred to the University Students Hospital. Comprehensive medical examination is applied to every newly admitted student.

ADMISSIONS

Undergraduate Studies
Students are admitted on an equal opportunity basis afier graduating from secondary schools. Their admission in different Faculties and Institutes and field of study is based on grades. The applicant should have the General Secondary Education Certificate or its equivalent. Alexandria University accepts non Egyptian applicants, and students wishing to be transferred from other Egyptian and non Egyptian Universities. The registrar at each Faculty provides the appropriate information
regarding their admission.

Postgraduate Studies and Research
Alexandria University has a wide range of modern facilities for post graduate studies and research in all Faculties and its main Institutes for research (the Institute for Medical Research and the Institute for Higher Studies and Research). Graduate courses and research are leading to Diploma, Masters, and Ph.D. degrees.

The minimum period of study for a Masters is one year, and 2 years for Ph.D., and one to two years for Diploma depending on the field of study. Postgraduate studies in all Faculties and Institutes follow credit hour system. Research projects and activities are implemented either on the University premises, in local communities within Alexandria Governorate or on the national level.

RESEARCH
Research is viewed at Alexandria University as an essential partner with classroom and laboratory instructions. While advancing human knowledge and understanding, research makes special contributions to the University's educational program by providing experience in theoretical and practical work for both students and staff members.

In addition to laboratories and research facilities organized within departments, there is an increasing number of central laboratories of an interdepartmental nature established to facilitate research work in fields which cross the lines of traditional disciplines. The mission-oriented type of research receives great attention from the University due to its importance in linking the University with industries and the community at large.

Research activities are funded through the University budget, grants from industry and international agencies and through agreements with donating agencies. Research projects and activities are implemented either on the University premises, in communities within Alexandria Governorate or in semi-urban and rural areas in the nearby governorates.

University Hospital

The Alexandria Faculty of Medicine incorporates 4 hospitals, staffed by 109 physicians and 259 residents. The hospitals have a total number of 3497 beds served by a total of 2877 nursing staff members and165 pharmacists. In 2002, there were 186857 admissions, 54936 operations and 835376 out-patient visits.

Main University Hospital houses the departments of general and special surgery (urology, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, plastic surgery and bums,gastro-intestinal surgery, oto-rhinolaryngology, emergency, ophthalmology and anaesthesiology), general and special medicine (chest diseases, dermatology, cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology, gastro-enterology, geriatrics and physiotherapy), radiodiagnosis, radiotherapy, medical oncology, pathology, clinical pathology and microbiology (residents=190, nurses=1901. The average of daily out-patient visits=1050, the average of daily emergency room visits= 674). In 2002, a total number of 31548 operations were performed, including 8966 same day surgeries.
