Armed Forces Medical College is a premier medical institute of India acknowledged as a centre of excellence for education and research. The college provides training to under-graduate and post-graduate medical and nursing students with assured career prospects in the defence services.The institute was set up on 01 May 1948 by an act of parliament of India on the recommendations of the BC Roy Committee by the amalgamation of various defence medical organizations.

The Graduate Wing of AFMC was established on 04 August 1962 to provide a sustainable and steady intake of medical officers for the Indian Armed Forces. The institute is presently affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and is recognized by the MCI for conducting undergraduate and various post graduate medical courses.

Armed Forces Medical College, Pune is a premier medical institution in India. AFMC has the distinction of being the first medical college set up by the Armed Forces of any country in Asia. The college is a unique institution which combines medical education with training specific to the health care needs of the Armed Forces. AFMC has been consistently rated among the top three medical colleges in India by surveys published by reputed newsmagazines for the past decade. It has received accreditation from NAAC with A Grading and during re-accreditation carried out recently has been awarded cumulative grade point average of 3.51 out of a maximum 4, which was the highest ever awarded to any institution in India, till that time.

Armed Forces Medical College was established on 01 May 1948. The institution conducts training of medical undergraduates and post-graduates, nursing undergraduates and post-graduates, dental postgraduates and paramedical staff. Patient care forms an integral part of the training curriculum and the affiliated hospitals utilise the expertise available at AFMC. The institution is responsible for providing the entire pool of specialists and super specialists to Armed Forces by giving them in-service training. Thus AFMC forms the backbone of high quality professional medical care being provided to the Armed Forces.

Col PP Chowdry, MC was the first Commandant of AFMC. The college is located in an environment friendly campus stretching over 119 Acres near Ramtekri in eastern Pune. Apart from well maintained gardens, the campus is home to an interesting mix of heritage buildings as well as ultramodern facilities. The campus is provided with all essential amenities. Apart from lecture halls, laboratories, demonstration rooms, museums, auditoriums, the students are provided fully furnished accommodation. The faculty and staff are also provided accommodation on campus.

The campus has a swimming pool, cinema theatre, cafeteria, general stores, Unit run Canteen and shopping centre, creche and nursery school, places of religious worship, gymnasium and facilities for all outdoor as well as indoor sports. The College is famed for its Graduate Wing, which was inaugurated on 04 Aug 1962 by Shri V K Krishna Menon, the then Defence Minister of India. AFMC has a total of twenty nine departments at present. The teaching departments of AFMC are well staffed with dedicated staff members. Lectures, practical, demonstrations and clinics are well planned and conducted round the year except for 2 short vacations.

Students in the clinical terms receive training at the affiliated teaching hospitals. These include Command Hospital (Southern Command), Military Hospital (Cardiothoracic Centre), Military Hospital Kirkee, Artificial Limb Centre and Cantonment General Hospital, Pune. AFMC has produced more than 6500 doctors since 1966, when the first batch passed out. The 46 batches, which have stepped out of the portals of this institution, are rendering yeoman service to the Nation.

The College of Nursing was established in November 1964. With an annual intake of 40 students who are selected through an all India competitive examination, it has produced more than 1000 nursing officers for the Military Nursing Services. Graduates of AFMC have distinguished themselves through dedicated service in India as well as abroad in UN Peace keeping missions.

At present, the college is conducting 89 training courses. At any given time almost 280 post graduate trainees are engaged in research and academic activities of the highest standard under the stewardship of 285 highly qualified and accomplished members of the faculty at AFMC and affiliated teaching hospitals. Paramedical personnel from all three services receive professional training at AFMC. At any given time 80 JCOs and almost 700 NCOs are undertaking courses in various Departments.

The finest clinicians, surgeons and stalwarts in medical science utilize their vast collective experience as teachers and researchers to pass on the baton of knowledge with unsurpassed devotion and care.

MBBS Admission

The college conducts Under Graduate course sanctioned vide Govt. of India Ministry of Defence letter no. 11984/DGAFMS/DG-3(B)/9718/D (Med) dated 04 July 1962

Admission Procedure:
The course commences in the month of August. Advertisements for recruitment appear in the leading news papers of the country in the month of December every year, for MBBS course. Candidates are required to submit their application forms in the prescribed format, along with other necessary documents mentioned therein.

The AFMC is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Science, Nashik and is recognised by the Medical Council of India.

Admission to MBBS course is based on written examination. The written examination is held on 1st Sunday of May. Successful candidates are called for interview in June for the courses starting in July. Admission is subject to medical fitness.

PROSPECTUS AVAILABILITY:
Prospectus is available on sale at all Major City GPOs/ HPO's/ Pos from the date of advertisement for approximately one month. The present cost of the prospectus is Rs. 250/-.

Course Duration:
The duration of MBBS course is four and a half year followed by internship of one year.

Service Liability:
Students have compulsory liability to serve as Commisioned Officers in the Armed Forces Medical Services. The offer of the type of commission will depend on the vacancies available. The candidates' parents/guardians are required to sign a bond agreement at the time of admission.

ELIGIBILITY AND QUALIFICATIONS TO APPEAR IN THE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION GENERAL:
A candidate seeking admission to the MBBS course is eligible to take the entrance examination if he/she fulfills the following criteria:

  • A candidate should be a citizen of India or be a subject of Nepal or Bhutan or a person of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan or any other foreign country with the intention of permanently settling in India.
  • Must be unmarried. Marrying during the course is not permitted.
  • Should be medically fit as per prescribed standards by the Govt. of India, Ministry of Defence
  • Must have attained the age of 17yrs on 31st Dec of the year of application, but must not have attained the age of 22 years on that date(Not more than 24 years in case of candidates who have passed or are appearing in final B Sc examinations).
Academic Qualifications:
Candidate must have passed all the subjects opted for in the first attempt of the qualifying examinations as a regular candidate with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken simultaneously and securing not less than 60% of the aggregate marks in these 3 science subjects taken together and not less than 50% marks in English and 50% marks in each of the science subjects. They must have also passed an examination in Mathematics of the 10th standard.

Number of Seats:
A total of 130 students (105 boys & 25 girls) will be admitted.

Syllabus For the Examination:
The general standard of the entrance examination will be that of 11th and 12th class under the 10+2 scheme/pre-medical/intermediate science or an equivalent examination of the State Education Board/Indian University

Method of Selection:
  • Candidates who are found provisionally eligible as per the criteria of eligibility, will be called at one of the examination centres to appear in the competitive examination on 1st Sunday of May. Issue of admit cards. however does not necessarily mean acceptance of eligibility which will be further scrutinized at subsequent stages of selection.
  • The written examination centre will be allotted to candidates depending upon the administrative arrangements for the examination and availability of adequate seating capacity.
  • The Roll Number of the candidates who qualify for interview based on the above written examination will be published in the leading newspapers. The college/DGAFMS take no responsibility for any error or omission in the roll numbers published in the newspapers.
Interview of Candidate:
  • On the basis of their performance in the written examination selected candidates in order of roll numbers will be called for an interview to be held in the month of June at AFMC, PUNE.
  • The exact date of the above interview will be intimidated to the selected candidates. Request for change of date of interview will NOT be entertained. The candidates will be required to produce originals of all certificates/mark sheets at the time of interview. All candidates will produce result or proof of having appeared in the qualifying examination held, at the time of interview (if the result of such examination has not been declared).
  • On the basis of the above test and interview two merit lists, one for boys and one for girls, will be drawn up and admissions will be offered only to candidates in accordance with their merit position. Individual letters of admission will be sent only to selected candidates who would be required to join AFMC. The remaining candidates will be on waiting list. The result will be published by the DGAFMS in the newspapers.
Department of Anatomy
The Department of Anatomy came into existence in 1962, as one of the first departments of the Undergraduate wing of the Armed Forces Medical College. It is housed in a beautiful heritage building just besides the Deans Office. It occupies in excesss of 25,000 sq.ft. and has a part of first floor of the Deans Office also.
The first Head of the Dept Lt Col NS Rao , FRCS started the dept and laid an excellent academic foundation by his untiring efforts.

He headed the dept for the first nine years and was succeeded by Lt Col TD Sinha , FRCS. Dr VR Mysorekar took over the Dept in 1973 . he was an excellent teacher and world renowned anatomist. He was awarded the BC Roy Award for Eminent Medical Teacher in 1984. He methodically built the Embryology section of the Anatomy museum. He published many scientific papers and contributed many chapters in various textbooks.

Dr GR Purohit was the head from 1987 till 1991, during his tenure the college celebrated the golden jubilee. Lt Col PK Verma was head of dept for a short time from 1991 to 1993. Dr RK Zargar then was head for 12 yrs during which many service officers completed their post graduation. Col BK Mishra was head from 2006 to 2009. during his tenure the dept was renovated and modern teaching aids were incorporated. Presently the dept is being headed by Lt Col R Bhatnagar. He has taken keen interest in upgrading the museum and Dissection Hall.
