Astrakhan State Medical Academy (AGMA) is the oldest institution of Astrakhan. In November 2008, she was 90 years old. AGMA way from the Medical Faculty of the University of Astrakhan (1918) to Medical School (1922) and the Academy (1995).

Over the past 90 years, high school, having carried out the first edition (1923) 21 specialist, gave the country more than 25,400 physicians who work in all corners of our country and abroad. Many of them have worked and continue to run for public office. Our graduates, doctors, participated in the development of health Kalmykia, western Kazakhstan, the Lower Volga region and other regions of the country.

In its ongoing development academy has become a multi-university. Currently, the structure of the Academy of 70 departments, each of which is carefully preserved in memory the names of those who have written glorious pages in the history of the academy.

Currently, the Academy enrolled 3,780 students, 197 interns, 176 residents, 63 graduate students. Over 200 doctors each year improve their skills at the Faculty of Advanced Medical.

Significantly intensified its training of researchers - the candidates and doctors of science. So, just for the period from 2003 to 2008.Academy officials are protected by 40 doctoral and 119 master's theses. Since 2007, has a special dissertation council for doctoral and master's theses in the following specialties: Internal Medicine, Surgery, "" Pediatrics ".

Now the academy is working nine full members and 2 corresponding members of various public academies, about 100 doctors of medical science, professors, 300 associate professors and candidates of science. Ostepenennost faculty academy currently stands at 67,7%.Scientists of our academy is constantly involved in many international conferences held annually, congresses, symposiums, congresses (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Chicago, Geneva, Basel, Stockholm, Vienna Cyprus, Brest France, etc.).

Academy in 2005 passed another certification and has state accreditation for the four programs of higher and postgraduate education: "Medicine", "Paediatrics", "Nursing", "Pharmacy".

The educational process is conducted at 7 faculties of higher professional education: medical, pediatric, medical-preventive, dental, pharmacy, management and senior nursing education, clinical psychology and 5 offices opened in 2006 at the Academy of Medical College: medical, nursing , midwifery, medical and preventive, pharmacy.

Also in the academy on the Rights of the structural units are: Faculty of Postgraduate Education (FPO), Advanced Medical, prevocational training, the Research Institute of Infectious Pathology edge (Research Instrumentation), Educational Research and Diagnostic Center (UNDTS) Narcological educational, scientific and treatment center, inter-chair the CA specialists preparatory department for foreign citizens.

At the academy, especially in the last 5 years, intensified publishing activities of faculty (PPP), out of print 48 books, more than 55 textbooks with the stamp of TMA, received 82 patents for inventions.

Obviously, few people know that the idea of creating in Astrakhan higher education institution was first suggested nearly 300 years ago. In the summer of 1712 the famous German philosopher and mathematician Leibniz sent to Peter I note in which he wrote: "Moscow is the capital of Astrakhan, Kiev and St. Petersburg deserve special attention with respect to institutions in these universities, academies, schools and everything that relates to this." Difficult for us to now comment on the reasons for such a statement and it is difficult to understand that even in that distant time, scientists have clearly seen the current geopolitical perspective Astrakhan land and its importance for the Russian state.

Astrakhan, at the crossroads of commercial land and waterways connecting the Caucasus to the Urals, the Caspian Sea to the Baltic and central regions of Russia with Asia and the Middle East since ancient times was for our country's strategic region. At the opening of the Medical Faculty of the University of Astrakhan course, was taken into account is extremely unfavorable epidemiological situation in the region - raging epidemic of smallpox, plague, cholera, typhoid fever, the highest incidence of tuberculosis, trachoma and leprosy.
