The Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute was started as a private Medical college in the year 1955 by Mysore Education Society. The Founders of this Society were Dr. R. Shivaram, Dr. Mekhri, Dr. B.K. Narayana Rao and Dr. B.V. Ramaswamy. In the year 1957 it was handed over to the then Government of Mysore and was affiliated to Mysore University and then on to the Bangalore University. In the year 1996 it got affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute has MCI recognition for 150 Undergraduate, 135 Postgraduate Masters Degree, 71 Diploma seats, {MS Anatomy, MD Physiology, MD Biochemistry, MD Pharmacology, MD Pathology, MD Microbiology, MD P & SM, MD Forensic Medicine, MS Ophthalmology, MS ENT, MS Orthopedics, MD Anesthesiology, MD Paediatrics, MD Gen. Medicine, MD Gen. Surgery, MD OBG, MD Radio Diagnosis, MD Radio Therapy, MD TB & CD,MD Psychiatry, MD Skin & V.D} and 2 Super Specialty seats each for M.Ch Urology & M.Ch Plastic Surgery.

MCI has inspected and granted recognition for 2 more Super Specialty courses DM (Neurology), M.Ch (Surgical Gastroenterology) and inspected for granting recognition to DM (Cardio Thoracic Surgery). Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute has Fellowship programmes in Vitreo Retina, Surgical Gastroenterology, Neurology and Dermato Surgery with 2 seats each. Para-medical courses are simultaneously being run in the Institution.

The College has a Central library stocked with several standard books and subscribes to about 120 journals (Foreign & Indian) each year.

The Institute is also involved in community health services at the Urban Family Welfare center, Siddiah road and Primary health centers at Sondekoppa, K G Halli, Hesarghatta and Pavagada.

Emergency services are available 24 hours including Traumatology and Blood bank

2-CT Scanners have been installed- one at Victoria Hospital and one at Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital.

The Centenary building houses new wards, the Nuclear medicine department with gamma camera and Modern Operation theatres. A Dharmashala, on the campus provides highly subsidized accommodation for patients attendants.

Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute Alumni Association has constructed a Digital Library and State of the Art Seminar Hall. This Digital Library has 65 nodes, which is used by the students and faculty of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute to acquire latest knowledge.

A State of Art Seminar Hall has been constructed with a capacity of 280 seats with the facilities of latest equipment for Tele-teaching. A Tele-medicine unit in collaboration with ISRO was started on the eve of Golden Jubilee Celebrations on 1.1.2006, with this Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute is the first Govt. Medical College to provide this facility in the state of Karnataka

M/s. Infosys Foundation has constructed and donated a 24 hours Central Laboratory at Victoria Hospital campus for the poor and needy patients at a cost of Rs 3 crores and Government of Karnataka has installed equipments worth of Rs. 3 crores for the Lab. It will not only fulfilsl the long pending requirement of the MCI, but also it will be very useful to Undergraduates, Postgraduates & Super-specialty students and faculty of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute.

Victoria Hospital is one of the oldest Hospitals with approximately 1000 beds wherein more than 800 patients are admitted as inpatient and nearly 900 patients are treated as out-patients every day. Vani vilas hospital, also one of the oldest hospitals has 536 beds and an average of 75-80 patients are treated as out-patients every day, 17-20 patients admitted, and average 500 surgeries per month are conducted.

Bowring and Lady Curzon hospital has 676 beds and an average of 700-900 patients are treated as outpatients every day, 70-80 patients get admitted, and average 420-450 deliveries per month are conducted in addition to 800 surgeries per month.

Minto Ophthalmic Hospital, the department of ophthalmology, BMCRI is a state of the art modern eye facility. This 100 year old reputed ophthalmic hospital has seen ophthalmology from its nascent stage in our country. Its heritage building along with the upcoming superspeciality wing caters to a large population of Karnataka and neighbouring states.

Minto Ophthalmic Hospital is a tertiary care centre providing comprehensive ophthalmic care to the community. Vitreo- retina, cornea, glaucoma, squint, oculoplasty, uvea, community ophthalmology are the ophthalmic subspecialities functioning at the hospital. As part of BMCRI, Minto Ophthalmic Hospital is providing world class training to the undergraduates, post graduates and fellows in superspecialities of ophthalmology.

Didactic lectures, clinical discussions, seminars, workshops and conferences by our highly qualified eminent ophthalmic faculty equip our students with first hand skill and knowledge to tackle complex clinical tasks.

Minto Ophthalmic Hospital, located on AV Road, Chamrajpet, opp Central Police Station, Bangalore - 560002 is a tertiary ophthalmic hospital which caters to the need of karnataka and also the neibhouring areas of other states. It is attached to the Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute and Research Institute autonomous institute of the Government of Karnataka.

The foundation stone of Victoria Hospital, the century old premier Medical Institutions of India was laid on 22nd June 1897 by her highness Kempananjammani avaru, the then maharani regent of Mysore to commemorate the completion of 60 years of reign of Queen Victoria. The Hospital was then formally inaugurated on 8th December 1900 by Lord Curzon the then Viceroy of India.

It started as a health centre with 140 bed strength which is now the second largest Hospital in India accommodating more than 1000 patients at a time. It is located in the hub of the city and is easily accessible.

This is a teaching hospital and is attached to Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, which is one of the premier Medical Colleges of India.The facilities available includes departments of Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiology and Radiotherapy, physiotherapy, Forensic Medicine super specialities include Plastic Surgery, Surgical and Medical Gastro Enterology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Cardiology and Urology

LIBRARY
Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute is one of the premier reputed Medical College in India, which is established in 1955 by Governmnt of Karnataka. Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute has a century old well-organized, well recognized teaching hospital known as Victoria Hospital established in 1906. Similarly equally recognized teaching hospitals such as Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospitals, Vanivilas Hospitals, Institute of Ophthalmology, Venkateswara Institute of ENT are attached as teaching hospitals to Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute.

Bangalore Medical College& Research Institute, Library and Information Centre is located in an independent block which is one of the repositories of medical knowledge and form an integral part of the institution. It is rich in its collection over the past five decades. This Library has a long history, starting with the closed-access of earlier times to the present day hybrid, digital and Electronic Library that use the latest technology for provision of information through various services. With dedicated Library staff the library is servicing the medical user community with the right medical information at right time.

The library has developed the resources and collection that is required for the student community of the institution. Originally, textbooks were simply the teacher lecture notes which were often sold lecture by lecture. Even today, many textbooks remain only slightly more than lecture notes. But BMCRI Library recognized the importance of textbooks and reference materials in higher education from inception and is firmly trying to extend the best to its users.

Computer centre:
The computer center was fully established last year. As per the Government order a Gazetted Officer is nominated as Information Officer. Four old computers are upgraded to Pentium III, and one computer is purchased under APICON fund. The center has its own Internet connection and E-Mail facilities catering to the needs of the faculty members and students.

The college is linked to National Medical Library, New Delhi through computer and it is very useful to have latest journals via E-mail. This is the only Medical College in the State to have this facility.

Under-Graduate Courses
MBBS

Intake : 150 seats

Admission Procedure:
The students are selected from Karnataka-CET exams-85% and All India exams-15%.50% of seats are reserved for SC, ST and OBCs .
The Karnataka Common Entrance Test and Aptitude Test is being conducted for the purpose of determining the eligibility / merit, for admission of Karnataka candidates to the First year or First semester of full time courses in Medical, Dental, Ayurveda, Unani, Homoeopathy, Naturopathy & Yoga, Engineering, Technology and Architecture courses, in institutions within the State of Karnataka.

Admissions to the Government seats shall be made in accordance with the Karnataka Selection of Candidates for Admission to Professional Institutions Rules, (in short Rules) as amended from time to time. In case of any discrepancy, the Rules shall prevail.

The candidates from outside Karnataka can also write the Common Entrance Test. However, the seats in Government / University / Aided courses in aided colleges will not be offered to such candidates. As regards seats in un-aided colleges, the details of seats available, if any, and the procedure of allotment, if seats are available, will be notified subsequently and will be subject to the above condition.


Age: For admission to Medical / Dental / Ayurveda / Homoeopathy / Unani / Naturopathy / Yoga courses, have completed the age of 17 years as on 31st December of the year of the admission.

Educational Qualification: For Medical / Dental / Ayurveda / Homoeopathy / Unani / Naturopathy / Yoga courses, have passed Karnataka 2nd PUC / 12th std. or equivalent exam with PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY & BIOLOGY as optional subjects with ENGLISH as one of the languages of study and obtained at least 50% marks in the PCB group. 40% in the case of SC / ST / Category-1 candidates provided that for Dental course, the candidate must have secured 50% marks in the optional subjects including English subject.

Application Form
Candidates who have studied or studying their 2nd PUC or 12th standard in educational institutions within Karnataka should get their brochure with application forms by submitting a demand draft for Rs.550/- to the Principals of the institutions in which they had studied or studying or appeared for the 2nd PUC or 12th standard examination.

The Karnataka candidates who have studied or studying 12th standard or intermediate or pre-degree or equivalent examination outside Karnataka (including Horanadu, Gadinadu & other Karnataka candidates), can get the brochure with application only through 'Speed Post', directly from the CET Cell, by sending a cloth lined self-addressed envelope of 25 cms x 30 cms size and a demand draft for Rs. 650/-drawn in favour of the Special Officer, CET Cell, Bangalore payable at Bangalore and Karnataka candidates residing outside India can get the brochures by sending a demand.

BDS

Intake: 60 seats

Admission Procedure:
Currently BMCRI does not have BDS courses. It is available in Government Dental college which itself is an autonomous institution separately. We only help them with completion of syballus by sparing faculty from Pre and Para clinical departments. The students here also are selected from Karnataka-CET.

B. Sc Medical Lab Technology

Intake: 30 seats

Admission Procedure:
This is through advertisement from BMCRI calling for applications from eligible candidates i.e. Plus two or equivalent with science as a subject. Selection is done as per merit and reservation roster guidelines.

B. Sc Allied Science

( Medical laboratory technology(as above), Cardiac Care Technology, Perfusion Technology, Radiotherapy, Radio Diagnosis, Operation theatre technology )

Intake: 50 seats

Admission Procedure:
These courses are proposed to be started under the Regional institute of Paramedical Sciences. Entry will be through common entrance test across country. Merit and reservation guidelines will be followed.
