About:
The need for qualified pharmacists in the present context made the Tamilnadu Chemists and Druggists to take a momentous decision on the Ist December 1979 to establish a College of Pharmacy in Chennai. The entire pharmaceutical trade in Tamilnadu rose to the occasion to offer their co-operation.

The sustained efforts taken by the Educational Trust brought the idea into fruition within a short span of time and the College of Pharmacy was inaugurated on 13th July 1980 by the then Minister of Health Government of Tamilnadu, Dr. H.V. Hande.

Dr. C.L. Metha, one of the senior members of the Pharmaceutical trade and President of the All India Organization of Chemists and Druggists Association made a spontaneous donation of land and offered a benevolent cash donation which set the pace for further donations. Dr. C.L. Metha a philanthropist had a vision to provide affordable and quality pharma education without collecting donation or capitation. The college was named after the illustrious Dr. C.L. Metha for yeoman services rendered by him towards the cause of Pharmacy education.

Mr. Harish L Metha, the illustrious son of Late Dr. C.L. Metha the founder of this college is a graduate in commerce from the University of Madras. He is the President of All India Manufacturers Organisation (TN), The Association of Management of Pharmacy Colleges (TN), All India Shwetamber Sthanakwasi Jain Conference (Youth Wing) (TN). He is also the Vice-President of National Chamber of Commerce, Bharat Scouts & Guides (National). He is the Syndicate member of the Anna University and University of Madras. He is also member of State Minority Commission.

Mr. Harish L Metha is educationalist and a visionary with zeal to bring education to the common man. He is on the board of various educational institution. He is the Secretary & Correspondent for four well known colleges.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICS:

FACILITIES AVAILABLE
The laboratories of the department of Pharmaceutics are equipped with sophisticated equipments like Six Basket Dissolution Apparatus, Constant Temperature Water Bath, Rotary Vacuum Evaporator, Brookfield Viscometer, Peristaltic Pump etc.,

The Department also has a pilot manufacturing machine room with facilities for preparation of tablets, liquid orals, capsules etc., It is equipped with Rotary Tableting Machine, Granulator, Tablet Coating Machine, Liquid Filling Machine, Capsule Filling Machine etc.,

RESEARCH FOCUS:
The main area of research in the department is Drug Delivery System: Novel Drug Delivery System are formulated, characterized and animal studies carried out to prove the efficacy of the modified dosage forms. Research work is carried out on controlled release, sustained release, liposomes, niosomes, transdermal patches, floating tablets, bioadhesive systems etc.

Techniques of solubilization: Various techniques are employed for enhancing bioavailability of drugs.

Pharmacokinetics studies : Pharmacokinetics studies on animal models are carried out to evaluate the various pharmacokinetic parameters.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY:

The Laboratories of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry are equipped with the necessary instruments, glassware and facilities for conducting practical classes and carrying out research projects. Rotary Vacuum Evaporator, Constant Temperature Oil Bath, pH meter, Vacuum Oven etc., are available.

RESEARCH FOCUS:
The synthesis of Novel Heterocyclic compounds is carried out by conventional and novel techniques such as microwave irradiation and ultra sonicator etc., The synthesized compounds are characterized by spectral techniques such as I.R., NMR and mass spectra methods. All the synthesized compounds are screened for its potential biological activities like anticancer, analgesic anti inflammatory antiulcer, anticonvulsant and antimicrobial properties. Methods are developed for assessing toxic effects and ulcerogenic properties etc.

DR.C.L.BAID METHA FOUNDATION FOR PHARMACEUTICAL EDUCATION & RESEARCH:
Dr.C.L. Baid Metha Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education and Research is a unit of C.L. Baid Metha College of Pharmacy. The entire research activity of the foundation is management by experienced faculty members under the guidance of The Director, Prof. Dr. S. Venkataraman. The foundation provides facilities for pharmacological screening of new synthetic molecules, single and polyherbal formulations.

The foundation conducts periodical Hands-on-Training programmes to technicians working in Medical, Pharmacy, ISM Colleges, Analytical and Q.C. departments.

Project work for M.Pharm Life Science (M.Sc., B.Tech & M.Tech) Biotechnology will be guided and supervised by experienced faculty in different field of specialization. Foundation also undertakes in house projects related to development of new formulations, drug delivery systems in both allopathic and herbal medicine segments. Short-term course is offered by the Research Foundation for products managers/executives in pharma industry, on technical writing of brochures, manuals, leave behind literature, visual aid albums etc
