Chongqing Medical University (CQMU), originally known as Chongqing Medical College, was founded in 1956, growing out of Shanghai First Medical College (the present Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University). The university is located in the city of Chongqing, which is the economic center on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and the newest municipality directly under the administration of the Central Government. With more than fifty years' development, CQMU has become a key university under the administration of Chongqing Municipal Government with an integrated educational system of Bachelor's, Master's, Doctor's and Postdoctoral programs in medicine as well as other related fields.

The university covers an area of 2.79 million square meters, with a building area of more than 1.4 million square meters. The university is composed of two campuses, Yuzhong campus in downtown area and Jingyun campus, which is under construction, in the 'city of universities' of Chongqing. The total assets of the university amount to 5.06 billion RMB, among which the equipments and facilities for teaching, research and medical services are worth 983 million RMB. The library has a collection of 1.32 million books.

The university has 4 affiliated hospitals directly under its administration, which are all rated as 'Upper First-class Hospitals' in China. There are more than 5,000 beds in the hospitals. The annual outpatient visits reach 5.54 million and the annual inpatient visits 115,000. Besides, the university has 15 teaching hospitals and other 5 affiliated hospitals which are not directly under its administration. Other two affiliated hospitals are now under construction.

The university has a staff of 5,228 personnel, of which over 300 are professors and over 800 associate professors. Many of them enjoy the special government allowances or have been selected into the national programs of 'Project for Millions of Talented People', 'Project for Millions of Talented People of New Century', 'Cheung Kong Scholar & Innovative Team Program', 'Project for New Century Excellent Talents in Universities', 'Project for Trans-century Talents' and 'Plan of Financial Support for Outstanding Teachers in Institutions of Higher Learning'.

The university has 4 state key disciplines, namely Infectious Diseases, Pediatrics, Clinical Laboratory Diagnosis and Neurology, as well as 29 municipal key disciplines. In addition, it has two state key laboratories of Ministry of Education, one state key laboratory of Chongqing and Ministry of Education, one national engineering research center, 15 municipal key laboratories, 11 research institutes, 4 research centers and 20 research laboratories.

CQMU has accomplished many research projects of various levels, including some state-level projects supported by National Key Technology Research and Development Program in the 6th to 9th Five-year Plan for National Economic and Social Development, Key Program of National Natural Science Foundation, National Basic Research Program (known as '973 Program'), National Hi-Tech Research and Development Program (known as '863 Program'), National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists, National Funds for the Development of New Drugs and Funds for Trans-century Talents of Ministry of Education. Meanwhile it has undertaken some international cooperative research projects. According to the report on the research paper retrieval in 2005 which was released by National Institute of Science and Technology Information, CQMU ranks 42nd in all the universities regarding the publication of research papers in important journals in China.

The university publishes several journals to readers home and abroad, such as Journal of Chongqing Medical University, Journal of Clinical Ultrasound Medicine, Journal of Pediatric Pharmacy, Researches in Medical Education and Chinese Journal of Hepatology.
Since 1978, CQMU has won various awards in science and technology 520 times, including National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology and National Award for Technological Invention. The High-intensity Focused Ultrasonic Therapy System (HIFU), which was initiated by CQMU, is the first large-scale medical equipment with completely independent intellectual property rights in China. It has been put into use in over 30 major hospitals in China and exported to about 10 foreign countries, such as Britain, Japan, Korea and Singapore.

The university has been actively conducting international exchanges and cooperation. So far, it has established relationships with more than 20 countries and regions in the world for staff training, exchange of students, academic exchanges and scientific research, such as the United States, Britain, Canada, Japan, Russia, France, Germany, Australia, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Hong Kong. 98 foreign medical experts have become our visiting or honorary professors.
Since 1980's, CQMU has begun to accept medical students for Bachelor's, Master's, Doctor's and Postdoctoral program from all over the world. It is among the medical universities which are judged by Ministry of Education to be qualified to enroll foreign students to learn medicine in English. It is also listed among the Chinese medical universities in WHO's official website and is recognized by ECFMG (Educational Committee for Foreign Medical Graduates) in the United States.

The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University
Established in 1957, The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University is a large general hospital which integrates clinical practice, teaching, research, prevention and health care, and in February 1994, it developed the Clinical Medical College of Chongqing Medical University on its base. The hospital is located on No.1 Friendship Road, Yuanjiagang, Yuzhong District, Chongqing City and is near the Olympic Games Centre, that encompasses nearly 127,000 m2

The hospital has become the largest general hospital of Chongqing city, with the most advanced equipments and technical resources after 50 years of evolution. It has 32 clinical departments, 6 medical technical departments and 2,000 beds. It receives about 1,000,000 outpatients, 40,000 inpatients and 50,000 emergency cases annually, and has a success rate of over 96% in rescue of critical patients.

The hospital has a strong academically oriented faculty with a rich clinical experience. It has 90 professors and 243 associate professors, among whom 46 are tutors doctor, 153 are masters, 43 are experts enjoying government subsides, 24 are entitled or nominated as the first academic leaders of Chongqing City and 44 are appointed as directors or associate directors of the Chongqing Medical Association.

The hospital is well equipped with the most advanced medical technologies.It has 64 Slice and 16 Slice Spiral CT Scanner, MRI, High Intensity Focusing Ultrasonic Therapy System (HIFU), Single Photon Emitter Computerized Tomography(SPECT), Innova Tabulate Detector, Digital Subtraction Angiography System (DSA), Linear Accelerator, Surgery Navigation System for Neurosurgery, Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber and a variety of endoscopes.

With such rich medical and technical resources, this hospital ranks as one of the best in China for its comprehensive diagnosis and treatment abilities; it is therefore a very dominant institution throughout the southwest area of China. The hospital has 22 medical centres including Chongqing Organ Transplantation Centre, Chongqing Neurosurgery Centre, Chongqing Diabetes Mellitus Centre and so on. It remains on the cutting edge of medical science both domestically and abroad. It routinely performs complex operations on every organ system of the body including the heart, brain, liver, kidney, chest, abdomen, and spine. Needless to say it can deal with the most difficult cases.

The hospital has 1 clinical mobile post-doctoral centre, 1 doctoral degree program for first class clinical discipline, 34 doctoral degree programs for second and third class discipline, 32 master degree programs, one state approved key specialty (Infectious Diseases), 17 provincial and municipal key specialties, 8 municipal key medical subjects?1 municipal key neurological laboratory, 3 municipal key medical laboratories, 13 research laboratories, 22 teaching and research departments, and 10 teaching hospitals. The Institute of Infectious Diseases, Parasitology, Neurology, Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Diseases are established, together with two health schools attached to the Chongqing Medical University and hospital respectively. The hospital has the capability of cultivating medical talents at all levels, such as post-doctorates, doctors, masters, 7-year postgraduates, 5-year undergraduates and students of the technological academy.

In the past five years, the hospital has been involved with more than 400 research projects, including '863' state programs and key projects of the natural sciences foundations of China, and acquired 60 different grade prises including state second grade scientific and technological achievements. The hospital is 22nd in the number of CSCD publications among all the medical establishments in China.

The hospital is entitled "Class A Hospital of the Highest Grade","One Hundred Best Hospitals", "Advanced Collective of the National Health System", "Baby Friendly Hospital" of the Ministry of Health and enjoys the honour of "Model Unit of Chongqing", "Demonstration Unit for Open Code Marked Price" and the first "Quality-assured Pharmacy" in Chongqing.

Founded by more than 400 medical stuff branched from famous Shanghai Medical College Fudan University in 1956, the real history of CQMU should be much longer.
