Christian Medical College Ludhiana

Region: Punjab Country: India

A unique and distinguishing feature of the Christian Medical College Vellore (CMC) is itslinkage with the large and widespread network of mission hospitals located mainly in semiurbanand rural areas and aiming to serve disadvantaged communities. With inpatientstrength of between 20 and 200 beds, these hospitals deliver broad based clinical services totheir local communities. The majority of students in CMC are sponsored by these hospitalsand have undertaken to serve in them for two years immediately after graduation.

CMC Recognises that its raw medical graduates face arduous challenges and difficulties duringthis service period but also that this can be an unusual learning experience for them. TheIntegrated PGDFM course is CMC response to the challenge of equipping them forcompetent and satisfying engagement with secondary level health care while also availing ofits educational opportunities. At the professional level, the graduates need to become proficient in broad basedmulticompetent secondary level care including much outpatient work.

The Christian Dental College, Ludhiana is an educational institution of an all India character established and run by the minority Christian Community. Its primary aim is to educate and train Christian men and women as health professionals, in the spirit of Jesus Christ for the healing ministry of the Church in India. However, like many other Christian educational institutions this college also offers educational facilities to other young men and women irrespective of religion, caste and community.Through education in this College the Christian Church seeks to make a significant contribution to the health standards of all communities of our nation with special emphasis on healthcare in the rural areas.

In 1968 a missionary Dr. J.J.Fason, Dental Surgeon came from U.S.A. to join the faculty of Christian Medical College with a vision to start a modern dental clinic in this part of North India. Dr. Fason took the dental department to its new heights for four years. In January 1972 he left India after giving the responsibility of the Dental Department to Dr. J.L.Joshi who joined Christian Medical College in January 1971.

The Dental Department has been providing dental health care services in the hospital and the community at large since 1968. Besides providing high quality tertiary care in the hospital, the dental department launched its unique community dental health services in 1984 to rural areas reaching out primarily to the vulnerable population of the children which is one of few innovative community dental health services in India. The mobile health van, donated by the Government of India, was converted into a mobile dental van and was equipped fully to deliver necessary dental health care at the door-step of the village, schools and community.

The Christian Dental College came up in 1992 as the most prestigious off shoot of Christian Medical College Ludhiana. Dr. Charles Reynolds, Executive Director, Ludhiana CMC Board, U.S.A Inc., was instrumental in raising funds from his friends and from ASHA (American Schools and Hospitals Abroad) for renovations of the existing building of the Christian Dental College, dental equipments, instruments, etc.

The Christian Dental College, Ludhiana, admitted the pioneer batch of 20 students to the BDS Course in August 1992, who have completed their BDS Course in 1996. The number of admissions to B.D.S. course has been raised to 40, with effect from 1998. Since July 1999 the Christian Dental College is affiliated with Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Kotkapura Road, Faridkot - 151203, (Punjab), India.

RESEARCH
The Christian Medical College, Vellore has its grounding in research from the work started by Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder, its founder. Over the past century, CMC has contributed significantly not only to the provision of health care to the poor and needy but also in generating and advancing knowledge to improve the provision of curative and preventive services to the people we serve directly and to the nation.

Research is an integral part of the vision and the mission of CMC. Research at the institution has been oriented to areas of need and emphasizes application of knowledge to relevant problems. The inculcation of an attitude of inquiry, acquisition of knowledge of the mechanisms of research and the conduct of research, at various levels of involvement in health care, are encouraged in faculty and students.

Research is the key to excellence in academic medicine, but the conduct of research is frequently misunderstood as requiring both skills and resources not available to the practicing clinician. Defining research as a systemic investigation in order to contribute to generalizable knowledge makes it clear that research can be conducted in any environment and with minimal resources.

Some forms of research, particularly in the basic and applied sciences, do require significant investments and we have been fortunate at CMC to obtain substantial grant funding to be able to support research in a wide range of some basic and substantial clinical and translational medicine.

Economic analyses have shown that the benefits of research are far in excess of investments. These analyses are based on the benefits to society in terms of human health and longevity, and do not consider the long term inquiry driven attitudinal changes that we seek to inculcate in our faculty and trainees.

Nonetheless, it is heartening that in addition to treating our patients individually or promoting community health, our research is key to fulfillment of our motto not to be ministered unto, but to minister on the widest and longest lasting scale.
