Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMCH) Ludhiana, Punjab, India is a 1100 bedded tertiary care teaching hospital in North India. Having an imposing complex of modern buildings, the institution is equipped with all kinds of modern facilities for providing proper care to the patients and training to the undergraduate and postgraduate students. All the clinical departments, along with the diagnostic laboratories provide round-the-clock service at the campus.

Motivated by a devoted personality, Dr Banarsi Dass Soni, Ex.Capt.I.M.S. with a missionary zeal for medical education and patient care, conceived the noble idea of providing much needed medical care to the general public. This bloomed in the form of Arya Medical School in 1934,started in a rented building in Civil Lines, Ludhiana.

In 1936, management of the medical school was handed over to the Arya Samaj, Saban Bazar, Ludhiana, under the aegis of Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, Punjab. A separate Managing Body was nominated by the Managing Committee of Arya High School, Ludhiana. It was shifted to its own building (now, Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, College Campus) in 1937.

The institution was recognized for LSMF (Licentiate of the Punjab State Medical Faculty) in 1938. The following year, the Managing Body decided that the Ludhiana Medical School should thereafter be called Arya Medical School and the hospital attached to it Dayanand Hospital.

It was only in the year 1964, consistent with the policy of the Government that the Arya Medical School flowered into a full-fledged MBBS College, which came to be known as Dayanand Medical College. The management of this college was taken over by a galaxy of prominent people of Ludhiana, who formed an organization known as the Managing Society of Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana and Late Shri H.R.Dhanda, a prominent industrialist of the town, became its Founder President.

MCI Recognition
The institution is duly recognized by Medical Council of India for the MBBS course as well as several specialty and super specialty courses.

Affiliation
The college is affiliated to the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot

The institution also imparts training for DM Courses in Cardiology, Neurology and Gastroenterology as well as forM.Ch. Courses in Plastic Surgery. Permission for starting MCh(Urology), MCh(Neuro Surgery) and MCh(CTVS) course is underway.

DMCH College of Nursing is one of the most modern and well-equipped nursing colleges of Punjab. It imparts excellent on- job training for General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) and B.Sc. (Nursing). Introduction of a post-basic diploma in cardiothoracic nursing and in critical care nursing is planned.

Medical Milestones
Historically, DMCH was the first hospital in Punjab to set up a dialysis unit in the Nephrology service in 1980. Since then, several other super-specialties have been added. At present, super-specialties, which are providing the most modern and advanced care to the patients,

All these disciplines are managed by highly qualified doctors who have at their disposal the latest sophisticated diagnostic and treatment facilities. At present, there are 37 super-specialist consultants (DM/MCh) on the hospital staff. The prominent state of the art investigative facilities available include:

It is the first and the only institution in India having, in its Department of Orthopedics, the facility of a unique technique of external fixators perfected by the internationally renowned Prof. Oganesyan from Russia.

DMCH is the only institution in North India, which has an entire floor of Intensive Care Units (ICUs) with 100 beds incorporating all the critical care areas. Notable ICUs are:

  • Pulmonary Critical Care Unit (PCCU)

Special care facilities for burns, neonates, thalassaemia and cancer patients.

Hero DMC Heart Institute (HDHI) with 120 beds became operative in April 2001 and is the leading cardiac medical and surgical care center in the region. The hospital has a Spect- CT Scan for nuclear medicine applications in various qualities especially Cardiology. The Institute has already performed more than 26,000 catheter laboratory procedures and 4200 O.T procedures.

The institution has well-developed urban and rural health delivery systems, with residential facilities for training of students and interns under the department of community medicine. Models for health care delivery and Community Oriented Learning have been developed in these areas in addition to research on community health problems, which has been widely acknowledged. Multi-purpose Dumra Auditorium is adding a new dimension to the curricular and extracurricular activities of the students and staff alike.

The institution has come up by the dint of hard work and sincere efforts of the faculty, the management, staff and administrators as also the co-operation of the students. DMCH, College of Nursing is one of the most modern equipped nursing colleges of Punjab. It is widely recognised as center of excellence in the field of Nursing Education with excellent job training facilities in North Zone. The College is affiliated to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, It is recognised by Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi and is approved by Punjab Govt.

College of Nursing occupies 5 acres of prime land with creamy white building on
sweeping lawns on Dandi Swami Road, Civil Lines, Ludhiana. Large playgrounds for Badminton with green surroundings are part of the College campus.

The institute has highly qualified and experienced faculty, many of whom have received national and international recognition for their research and publications. There are frequent visits of guest lecturers from national and international universities, which bring their research and development into classrooms.

The College has well-equipped laboratories of Fundamentals of Nursing, Nutrition, Maternal and Child Health with latest equipment i.e. bandaging simulators, injectable simulator, I/V arms, Baby Manikin and instruments. Laboratories of Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology of Medical College are also used for B.Sc. Nursing Students.

There is a well-equipped separate library for nursing students with all the modern
facilities. The library has 1700 nursing books and 200 nursing journals. In addition, there is main Library in the hospital, which is equipped with a large number of professional books and journals. Nursing candidates can also use the main library.

The College has well ventilated four classrooms with modern facilities. To enhance the presentation of academic exercises like lectures, seminars etc., the institute has a good Audio-visual setup with TV, D.V.D. player, Overhead projectors with white screens, Slide projector, sound system, models and charts for the use of the faculty and students.

The college possesses good and comfortable accommodation for girls with all the facilities including 24-hour security, entertainment, boarding and mess. Hostel rooms have attached bathrooms and geysers. Safe drinking water is available for students.

The School of Nursing was started in 1954 with an idea to train Auxiliary Nurse Midwifes in 1969, the school was upgraded to 3 years General Nursing Courses. School of Nursing is affiliated to the Punjab Nurses Registration Council, Mohali and is recognized by the Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi. It admits 50 students to the GNM course every year.

The College of Nursing came into existence in Oct, 2002. It admits 50 students to B.Sc. Nursing Course every year. Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana building situated at Tagore Nagar has a bed strength of 800 and is equipped with all kinds of modern facilities for providing proper care to the patients and for training the undergraduate and postgraduate students. All the clinical departments, along with the diagnostic laboratories, provide round the clock services at the campus.

Library
The first batch of MBBS course in Dayanand Medical College and Hospital started in the year 1964 and library was also established in the same year with a single room. In 1977 it was on one floor in old college campus. In the present location, the library is spread over an area of 6930 Sq. feet in the basement of Hero Heart Institute Building.

Visitors to this house of learning paradise are palpably impressed with the vast collection of books and journals. There are 14,881 books on different medical subjects and 14,826 bound volumes of journals. Over 117 Foreign journals, 50 Indian medical Journals grace themselves in addition to it 9 online journals.

It is clean, quiet, spacious and yet crowded. Central air conditioning keeps it comfortable the year around. Not only is the atmosphere most congenial for study, the easy availability of the required books and journals keeps everyone satisfied. An annual budget of over Rs. 47 lacs takes care of the needs.

Visitors are deliberately impressed with the vast collection of books and journals on various Specialties. Perfectly catalogued books, gracing the racks themselves speak of the well-organized structure. Besides this, for leisure reading, the library subscribes to a large number of newspapers and magazines also.

Medical Officers In charge were Dr. G. Avasthi (1976-1995), Dr. S.C Ahuja (1995-1998), Dr. Rajoo Singh Chhina (1999-2004), Dr. S.C. Chopra (2004-2009) and at present Dr. Rajoo Singh Chhina (2009- Till date) is the officer In charge of the library.

The pride of the library is its reference section, which is equipped with 425 latest books on all medical subjects. A separate dissertation section having 989 theses is a distinct feature of this library, benefiting post-graduate students not only of DMCH, but also from the other medical institutions of the region.

There is literally a pin-drop silence and gentle footsteps creeping in and out are the only sounds audible. The library has a sitting capacity of 240 readers. The library is being computerized using TLSS library software in Library, Wi-Fi Internet facility (DSL) services are provided for the faculty.

Most of the core journals, which the library has been subscribing, are available in the library for the last thirty years continuously. The oldest journal in our library is Medical Annual, 1922. The library has numerous back volumes of journal, which are available since 1930 onwards.

CD- ROM Service
The library is enriched with valuable and informative books, journals, research theses and electronic books on CD ROMs & DVD ROMs, which are fulfilling the needs of users. The current reading material is as under:

Reader Services
  • Issue and Return: Issue and return of books are provided from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. There is no issue and return on Sunday/holiday. However, reference books for reading in library are issued and returned throughout the working hours. Back volumes and current journals are issued for Photostat only.
  • Reference Service: Reference service, both short range service and long range service are provided meticulously
  • Current Awareness Service (CAS): Dissemination of information to the concerned user/department about the new books and journals, which are received in the library.
  • Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI): Providing information/literature as per need/interest of the user
  • Bibliographical Services: Compilation of bibliography on a particular subject by using different indexes/databases.
  • Document Delivery Service (DDS): Providing document/micro-document on demand from its own resources or from out side sources.
  • Photocopy: Photocopy service is available in the library from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on the nominal charges.
  • Wi Fi Internet: Library provides Wi Fi Internet service to its users from 8 A.M. to 12 Midnight.
