Eduardo Mondlane University was founded on August 21, 1962, under the name of General Studies University of Mozambique. In 1968 rose to the rank of University, and then called the University of Lourenco Marques (ULM). While still a young University is the oldest and for a long time, the only one in Mozambique. From 1976 to ULM was renamed itself by Eduardo Mondlane University.

At that time there was a curriculum reform, introducing new curricula the bacharorships, in order to meet the needs of the labor market more quickly, these needs compounded by the departure of qualified personnel in the country. EMU took jobs in the senior classes of pre-university courses through the diagnostic procedures, educational and restructured the branches,turning them into accelerated courses for teacher training, while courses were opened in the area of Science Education in Faculty of Education established in 1981. EMU came out early as a national university, and it was a policy designed to guarantee equity of access to students from various regions of the country, seeking to preserve and increase the female presence in the institution . Great was the effort of a handful of Mozambican teachers in structure, organize, adapt and lay the foundations for development of the institution, and the Government of Mozambique to understand its importance in keeping it operating in a context very difficult.

For her spent many generations of young people today have functions and activities in various spheres of activity, the level of government, the social sectors, economic and services in the country and even at the level of other countries. There is great pride that the institution feel throughout its history, for his involvement in the training of teachers able to guarantee the education of young generations in Mozambique, in training senior technicians for the different spheres of activity. The history of the institution, since its inception, reflecting the periods of history of the country that influenced and determined the process of teaching, research and connection to society, from the definition of professional profiles in terms of training, the type of research to be undertaken.

Today the Eduardo Mondlane University is situated in a social context transition to a market economy, democratization of the structures, and within a plurality of institutions of higher education, a context that makes it imperative that the "Rethink" the University Eduardo Mondlane, national, regional and international mix to local needs, but able to respond in quality to the challenges facing the international level.

The Rector of EMU
The Rector of the Eduardo Mondlane University is appointed by the President.
Under the general guidance of the University Council, the Rector represents and directs the University of Eduardo Mondlane.
Powers of the Rector

Rector skills are:
Represent the University of Eduardo Mondlane;

University Council propose to the general orientation of the life of Eduardo Mondlane University, plans for medium and long term, the annual plan and budget, and submit the same authority the annual activity reports and accounts;

Designate, after consultation, to members of collegiate bodies whenever necessary;

Appoint, exonerate and dismiss, after consultation, the Directors and Deputy Directors of Central Services and the Faculty and Heads of Department;

University Council propose to the structure of central services as well as changes that may be necessary;

Admit, promote, discharge and dismiss teachers, researchers and members of the Administrative and Technical Staff in accordance with the law, statutes and other regulations in force at the Eduardo Mondlane University;

Ensure proper implementation of resolutions of the University Council and the recommendations approved by the Academic Councils and Directors as well as compliance with regulations and standards in force at the University Eduardo Mondlane;

To oversee the academic management, administrative and financial, ensuring the harmonization of the functioning units of the University of Eduardo Mondlane;

Approve training programs for teachers;

Assign titles, heard the Academic Council;

Define and guide the support to be provided to students within the social services and extra-curricular activities;

Guide and promote the relationship with the University Eduardo Mondlane bodies or national, foreign and international.

Fit the Rector all the powers that by law or the Articles are not assigned to other bodies of Eduardo Mondlane University.
The Rector may delegate some of its powers to the Vice-Chancellors and Directors of units.

Mission
Eduardo Mondlane University strives to be an institution of excellence in the context of education, science, culture and technology, educating for life that enables professionals and assuming responsibilities in the process of innovation and knowledge transfer and sustainable development .

Eduardo Mondlane University strives for integration and affirmation in the world scientific community and being an agent and subject to change and transformation of society.

To fulfill this mission, the EMU should be guided by the following principles and purposes:efficient management in the context of university autonomy;

  • democratic practice, respecting the intellectual independence and academic freedom;
  • development, enhancement and rational use of its resources, both human and material;
  • constant adaptation of curricula to advances in science and technology and to the national and regional level;
  • reflecting the needs and perspectives of national and regional development in research, extension and education;
  • increase in the number of tickets and rates of graduation and academic success through the development of new methods of teaching and assessment;
  • support and cooperation with other levels of the National Education System;
  • ensuring fairness in all actions with respect for cultural diversity, ethnic, racial, religious and gender;
  • the economic and social conditions does not constitute limiting access to their courses;
  • promotion of civic education, ethics and social
  • promoting the spirit of academic, scientific and critical, as well as professional pride;
  • intensification of connection and cooperation with the national productive sector and the community;
  • strengthening and broadening of regional and international cooperation.

OFID in Mozambique - Eduardo Mondlane University

OFID has supported Mozambique's National Strategy for Higher Education through the Eduardo Mondlane University project, which is featured in this video. The university's infrastructure has not kept pace with increasing enrolment levels. OFID's co-financing will help fund construction of four new buildings to accommodate mathematics, computer science, biology and administration, totaling over 12,000 square meters. With an expected 40 percent increase in graduates, the university will help strengthen human capacity, and in turn, boost the country's socio-economic development.
