Govt. Medical College, Surat was established in the year 1964 with the primary purpose of providing medical knowledge and for increasing care for the sufferers of Southern Gujarat and around areas.

The university includes an area of 130 acres of Medical college, hospital, hostel and residencies for staff.

At the moment the college confesses 150 learners for M.B.B.S course every year. There are postgraduate and diploma courses in various disciplines. The hospital has a bed strength of 1050. Nearly 2000 out patients attend the hospital and about 75-80 patients are admitted daily. Surgical treatment and other ailments are offered in different departments by certified and knowledgeable clinicians.

There is opportunity for enhancement and development of features in various areas. The current features need up gradation with regards to facilities, furnishing, equipment and instruments, etc. New facilities are also required in the fields of cardiology, neurology, Nephrology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, etc.

Related degree and post-graduate courses like dental, nursing, and physiotherapy are the demanded courses in this region. Programs for coaching experts should also be given a concern.

More focus is needed to motivate research in different areas. Effort is made to observe the quality of medical knowledge and to progress impressive methods for improvement.

GMC Surat is approved by MCI (Medical Council of India). This offers many courses in the medical field both in undergraduate and postgraduate levels

Admission Procedure:
According to the rules and regulations of the Medical College, the candidates have the eligibility of higher secondary with the pattern of Gujarat Higher Secondary School Education Board.

Only the students of Gujarat are regarded qualified for admission. The college confesses its learners totally on benefit on the basis of marks acquired in the entrance examination

Infrastructure
GMC provides hostel service to its learners.

Undergraduate:
The hostel building consists of 4 blocks with 156 rooms which has the capacity to provide 468 learners , 2 for women's hostel with 86 rooms which accommodate 208 learners.

Post Graduate:
7 blocks of Post graduates with 198 rooms which accommodates 198 students.
