About The University
Founded in 1974 with only 374 students, the INSTITUT SUPERIEUR DES SCIENCES has experienced a rapid qualitative changes, which explains its development and remarkable radiation. It is listed among the universities and stable performance of the sub-region of West Africa as an example of successful brewing between students from different backgrounds. For the 2003-2004 academic year, the University of Ouagadougou has nearly 20,000 students.
University called the second generation, it started its academic activities on the basis of Schools and Institutes: School of Letters, Graduate Institute of Technology, Higher Polytechnic Institute, Institute of Physics and Maths then School of Economics, School of Law, School of Health Sciences, Institute. Cinema, etc..
Always concerned about the quality and relevance of his teachings, the utilitarian nature of his research, after several restructurings (in 1985 and 1991), it engaged in a profound overhaul since October 2000. In this context and in the direction to better meet the missions assigned to it, she changed her legal status, becoming a public institution with scientific, cultural and technical (EPSCT).
Objectives
This overhaul should enable INSTITUT SUPERIEUR DES SCIENCES :
. bring the highest level and at the best rate of progress, the higher forms of culture and thought Burkina Faso;
. train and develop business leaders, administrative and technical staff, middle managers and skilled workers with the public and the private sector need;
. be a pole of local, national, regional and international levels. The University of Ouagadougou, like the universities of the sub-region has experienced some difficult years. Since the advent of the overhaul in 2000, she works to regain its influence and its former glory. Thanks: - to the dynamism of its teaching staff is mostly young and the results speak for themselves in CAM: - the relative social peace and political stability in the country for several years - the spirit of dialogue and prevailing consensus among all stakeholders (policy makers, teachers, students, administrative, technical, and support workers) - the implementation of modern management techniques
(computer and internet communication). To this must be adding the willingness of policy makers and the academic community: - improve internal efficiency and external efficiency by concrete actions in terms of capacity building for reception, open fields and professionalized a better partnership between the university and the world of production and enterprises - now open that temple of knowledge to its environment, society, Burkina Faso; - to channel more academic research into problem solving development and well-being of people in all areas - to intensify the development of new information technologies and communication (Internet, computers, distance education...).
The University of Ouagadougou which has always been a successful example of mixing of peoples and strong support from the university community, will continue to serve as a center of excellence with the conviction to serve as Burkina Faso and the entire sub-region , combining basic education and vocational training.
The Faculty and Institutions
Unit Training and Research is a structure of higher education for training and research on theoretical, applied and professional. It combines the advantages of the faculty (basic education) and those of an institute (professional) and more responsive to the market in that it can create its own specialized centers, institutes or even schools on the basis of a specific development project. From the perspective of control and flow management, access will be the capacity for care and supervision, the choice of the University Faculty is an educational jump qualitatively superior, in that they justified by the fact that they are evolving structures that can be modified at any time: suppression or creation.
The institute structure of higher education and scientific research whose mission is professional training. The University of Ouagadougou consists of seven units of Training and Research (UFR) and an Institute.
The modular system of education
Enhance the quality of training, to increase the efficiency and effectiveness is one of the main objectives of the overhaul. The internal efficiency is nothing but good academic results. Under the old system, the University of Ouagadougou record only very low success rate. The average was around 30% against a performance-which raised many questions both on the quality of teaching that the level of basic skills and attendance of students.There is very little concern of the education system, not merely as accusations of blame for the most part unfounded.
This is especially true for teachers recruited to the University generally have strong training, excellent results when they have records to promote both regional and international levels. They have always honored the University of Ouagadougou, Burkina by the quality of their services at meetings of the Consultative Committees of the Council Inter- African and Malagasy Higher Education (CAM). So it's not a problem from the quality of our teachers. This is not a lack of motivation to work and professional irresponsibility are the results for the least poor performance at the university because in spite of very difficult conditions of teaching, our teachers have always excelled connaissance to transmit to future leaders of this country that his students.
The responsibility of the students can explain the low rate of success in college? Here again, it is difficult to be entirely positive view of the various levels of selection from primary to secondary. At first, those who enter through the cracks of the various stages of selection can be considered elite. Out of 100 elementary students, 25 secondary and access the one received by the university. The selection is so rigorous and the situation can not be explained by the level of student training, even if it is true that their lives and studies very difficult.
These two factors can not be challenged, look elsewhere. The low rate of success can only come from the evaluation mode, the mode of assessment efforts. The experiment was attempted with the implementation of the modular education system since the year 2000-2001 for first year undergraduates. In 2003-2004, the new system has spread to all levels. With the modular system of education, the results are more satisfactory success rate from 30% for the years prior to the overhaul, to 62.91% in 2000-2001 to 67.84% in 20012002 and 62.60% in 2002-2003.
The modular system of education is based on academic credits that combine basic education and vocational training within the units training and research institutes of the University of Ouagadougou.
The modular education system include:
- to the student can organize his schedule in the academic year and not be overwhelmed at the end of year
- the teacher, the possibility of holding examinations in agreement with students at the end of his teaching and to free it easier to concentrate on his research.
Modular education also facilitates the evaluation of the student, continuing education and on-demand, access to training of workers, modular international relations, the opening and closing of specialized modules rather than entire sectors . It promotes finally obtained by the maximum student loan to increase his chances in the world of work.
