Igbinedion University Okada marks the realisation of the dream of Sir, Dr. Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin kingdom, to bequeath to future generations a University with international standard where academic calendar is faithfully run without interruption. The university came into existence following the presentation of a certificate of approval on the 16th of May 1999 by the Federal Government (Certificate No. 001).

Thus Igbinedion University became the first licensed Private University in Nigeria. The foundation students arrived at Okada on Friday 15th October 1999. The university since then has without interruption upheld its desire to advance the frontiers of knowledge and reinstate the dignity and quality of university Education in Nigeria. Since its inception, the Igbinedion University has been recognised as a major force in the Nigerian higher education scene through its high quality degree courses.

The University continues to have extensive and rewarding links with industry commerce and a number of other prestigious Universities both at home and worldwide for the benefit of its students.

The Essential IUO
Igbinedion University Okada (hereafter referred to as IUO) is Nigeria first, leading and most prestigious private university. Approved as a limited guarantee in 1992 under the Federal Republic of Nigeria Companies and Allied Matters Act of 1990 and licensed as a private university under the Education National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions Amendment) Act of 1993, the law establishing the university (Igbinedion University Law) came into effect on 10 May 1999, which is observed as the University Foundation Day. IUO is in Okada, a semi-urban city which is headquarters of Ovia North East of Edo state, one of Nigeria 774 local government areas.

It is 30 minutes by road from Benin City, seat of the famous Benin Empire and capital of Edo state in the Southern Mid-West, 3 hours from Lagos, Nigeria commercial capital and 6 hours from Abuja, the federal capital. There are also air services from Benin City to Lagos (30 minutes) and Abuja (1 hour).

Targets

• Transformation of IUO into an internationally competitive centre of academic excellence and maintenance of its position as Nigeria leading private university;
• Continued quality assurance of academic programmes through national and international accreditations
• Establishment of autonomous Igbinedion Universities in West Africa to ensure a solid basis for the planned international revolution
• Improvement, expansion and consolidation of existing academic programmes with special focus on Medicine, Nursing, Engineering, Law, and Business
• Further development and expansion of IUTH as centre of clinical studies for medical students
• Expansion of research capacities through establishment of a research directorate headed by a Dean and new specialist research programmes designed to further the millennium development goals (MDGs) in poverty alleviation, solar energy research, HIV/AIDS, entrepreneurship, cancer research, and conflict management, as well as the strengthening of the Centre for Presidential Studies
• Establishment of School of Diplomacy and International Security Studies and its positioning as a resource for the African engagements of the UN, AU, EU, World Bank/IMF, ECOWAS and other international bodies in the areas of conflict prevention, mitigation and management, peace-keeping, peace-building, statecraft and economic development.
• Establishment of a branded Business School to offer innovative programmes in business and public management, corporate leadership and governance at the postgraduate level
• Upgrading and transformation of the Library into a state-of-the-art facility able to lever and support the overall transformation of the university
• Upgrading of hostel and municipal service delivery to make them befitting of a world class private university
• Real time decentralization of academic and administrative structures to grant them autonomy of operation and enhance overall delivery of programmes and services
• Diversification of funding sources through the establishment of an advancement office, IUO Consultancy outfit and various university-managed enterprises, aggressive fundraising, and support from international development partners
• Establishment of Igbinedion University Press
• Robust and aggressive staff development programme to grow the bottom heavy staff profile into a top level profile through capacity building in ICT proficiency and other competences, development of postgraduate training, collaboration and linkages with reputable and older foreign universities, research grants, and increased publications in reputable journals
• Strengthening of ICT capacity and solutions through acquisition of up-to-date technologies and development of local competences
• Strengthening of entrepreneurial programme
• Extension of global linkages, networks and affiliations through consolidation of existing linkages with the University of Westminster and Howard University, and smart partnerships with universities, international development partners and other institutions especially on projects designed to further the realization of MDGs.
