Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health is a premier organization promoting tertiary level Child Health Care services. It is an autonomous body, registered under Karnataka Societies Registration Act 1960 functioning under the control of Ministry of Medical Education, Government of Karnataka. It is located in its own premises next to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences at South Hospital Complex in Bangalore.

The Institute has two main constitutional bodies, namely the General body and Governing Council. The General body formulates overall policies while the Governing Council is responsible for the management and administration of the Institute. Both these bodies comprise members nominated by the Government of Karnataka from time to time. The Hon'ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare is the Chairman & the Hon'ble Minister for Medical Education is Vice-chairman of the Governing Council. The Director of the Institute is the Member Secretary and academic Head.

The Finance Committee, Building Committee, Tender inviting and Tender Accepting Committees are constituted by the Governing Council to consider and to recommend matters for approval of the Governing Council with regard to matters related to the respective committees.

Realising the need for a full fledged state level hospital for children.The first management committee constituted by Government of Karnataka in their order No. HFW 86 BRA 84 at 17-8-1984 with Sri V.S. Krishna Iyer as its chairman.

Sri B.L.S. Murthy as Treasurer and Dr.D.G. Benakappa as convenor to collect donations from the public and take such other actions for the early establishment of institute and Child health.

The Registration of Institute of child health Karnataka as a society on 6-8-1985 marked the beginning of an epochful chapter in child health in Karnataka.

BRIEF HISTORY:

Karnataka did not have a hospital exclusively to take care of Child Health. Realizing this need, Dr.Benakappa, experienced a dream to establish a hospital to provide comprehensive health care to the children. Accordingly, on attaining superannuation from Karnataka Government Service in 1988, he was appointed as the Special Officer for the specific purpose of preparing a project report for the establishment of such a proposed Institute.

Dr.Benakappa's untiring efforts, the project report was completed within 4 months and submitted to Government of Karnataka. Finally, he was successful in convincing the Government of Karnataka to establish an independent autonomous Children's Hospital to effectively care for children's health in the State. The construction was started in 1991 with the support of Government of Karnataka to build a great project i.e., 250 bedded hospital with the main objectives to promote, establish, maintain and develop an Institute for Child Health with a view to provide treatment and advanced care and to encourage and promote research and training in Child Health.

During its inception, as a Director since 1991 with his constant efforts, to raise Donations, Grants from Philanthropic Public & Government of Karnataka to construct and to acquire infrastructural facilities for the Institute. Finally, the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health developed in a phase by phase manner and started functioning from the year 1995 with the support and co-operation extended by the Govt. of Karnataka and Governing Council.

Founder Director of Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health, Bangalore, the Project of Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health, Bangalore - multispecialty and superspeciality 250 bedded hospitals for children and a postgraduate institute of Higher Medical Sciences costing to Rs.800 Lakhs including Building and equipments has been completed under his leadership.

Now it is a Hi-Tech Institution, with the State of the Art facilities such as Paediatrics Intensive Care, Neonatal Intensive Care, Paediatric Surgery with well equipped ventilators support and well equipped laboratory and radiodiagnosis departments etc., Apart from this, the Institute is recognized by Medical Council of India and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health for conducting postgraduate courses in Paediatric speciality and also recognized as an Institute of National Importance. Presently, the Institute is providing medicare services not only to the children of Karnataka but also to the neighbouring States and all over the Country.
