Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research

JIPMER traces its origin to 1823 when a medical school called "Ecole de Medicine de Pondichery" was established by French government. In November 1956 the Government of India took over the medical college in the wake of the de facto transfer of Pondicherry. The college was upgraded as a Regional Centre and named as Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) on 13th July 1964.

JIPMER campus is located in the western entrance of Pondicherry on the highway and spread over 195 acres of sloping land that is a hillock, known in vernacular as Gorimedu. The campus is self sufficient in many ways and contains well laid roads, green trees & plants apart from Post-Office, Bank, Shopping centre, Hostels, and Residential complex.

The institute conducts a number of medical and paramedical courses. Admission to the courses are made on all India basis and strictly on the basis of merit through entrance examinations.

The institute is also active in research in various fields of modern medicine & health and medical education. A research council at institute level looks after the research activities and there is a scientific society which provides forum for presentation of the research work. A number of conferences, workshops, seminars and training courses are conducted by the institute every year.

Funds for research come from mural and extramural sources like ICMR, UGC, DBT, WHO, etc. A number of research papers are published by residents and faculty staff every year in journals of national and international repute. Also quite frequently a number of awards and fellowships are won by the faculty. Some important national Journals like Biomedicine (an International Journal of Biomedical Sciences) is published from JIPMER. Many text books have been authored by the faculty members.

JIPMER Hospital
JIPMER hospital provides most modern allopathic treatment for all diseases and disorders and has modern sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic facilities that are provided free of costs to patients. The hospital outpatient department attracts more than 4000 patients daily not only from Pondicherry but also from surrounding states.(nearby states of Tamilnadu, Andhra, Karnataka and Kerala).

The inpatient departments have 860 beds distributed among various medical, surgical and super specialities. It has one of the best organised Medical Records Department in the country. Other auxiliary departments like Central Sterile Supplies Department (CSSD), Kitchen, Laundry & Central Workshop etc. provide support services to the hospital.

The hospital is equipped with whole body CT scan and a number of ultrasound equipment for noninvasive imaging, high pressure liquid chromatography, automated cell counter, autoanalysers for biochemical parameters and blood gas analyzer, etc. for diagnostic support. The blood bank works round the clock and ensures that each unit of blood that issued is tested for AIDS and Hepatitis-B viruses. Medical, surgical and respiratory critical intensive care units provide excellent critical care services for cases of heart attack, poisoning, stroke, etc. The present casualty services unit is being upgraded as a separate emergency services department with all modern critical care equipments to be installed in New Casualty Block.

The operation theatre complex consists of 10 operating suits that are equipped with the most modern anaesthetic equipments and monitors. The super speciality departments like Cardiothoracic surgery, Urology and Plastic surgery provide quality care for open heart surgery for replacement of valves, by pass of coronary arteries and genitourinary surgery etc. using latest equipments and modern endoscope & laser techniques. A Burn unit and Breast Cancer screening & Surgical Gastroenterology clinics; Video Laproscopic surgery and Nasal Endoscopic Sinus surgery services were added in recent past.

The Orthopaedic centre houses modern facilities with physiotherapy and occupational therapy units. Cobalt teletherapy unit and brachytherapy unit are available in the department of Radiotherapy. Department of Cardiology is equipped with a sophisticated Cardiac Cath Laboratory and specializing in non-surgical management of heart diseases. It is emerging as number one centre for implantation of pace makers.

The institute is also involved in all centrally sponsored national health programs like Family planning, Leprosy Eradication, Malaria control, Prevention of Blindness, ICDS, Control of AIDS, Expanded program of immunization. The department of Psychiatry is recognized as one of the five national drug de-addiction centres in the country.

The department of Microbiology is recognized as a centre for sero-surveillance of HIV infections and viral hepatitis. AFP surveillance is conducted by department of Paediatrics which is also equipped with a Neonatology unit. The department of Pharmacology runs one of the six adverse drug reaction monitoring centres in the country and recently a sleep laboratory has been set up to study sleep disorders. The satellite rural and urban health centres act as centres for reorientation and training of medical students. Mobile health clinics under ROME scheme are rendering useful services to remote villages.

Academic Council

Academic Council of VMU is the highest policy making body with respect to all academic programs of the university. The Academic Council considers regualations of various programs, evolves academic administration policies, provide quality policies, evolve new programs of study, approve new curriculum, changes and modifications in curriculum and syllabus, prescribe standards for syllabus, review academic infrastructure for optimal delivery of academic programs, track faculty-student ratio, evolve policies on research activities in the university and consider other matters of academic interest to the university.

The Academic Council of VMU, chaired by the Vice Chancellor, consists of the heads of all constituent institutions of the university, deans of faculties, senior professors of the university and registrar of the university. The university also has the privilege of nominating persons of proven record of achievement as ex-officio members to the council.
Faculty of Medicine

Medical education in VMU is offered at three locations - Vinayaka Mission‛s Kirupananda Variyar Medical College & Hospitals (VMKVMCH) in Salem, Aarupadai Veedu Medical College & Hospitals (AVMCH) in Puducherry and Vnayaka Mission‛s Medical College & Hospitals (VMMCH) in Karaikal. With hospitals attached and state-of-the-art campus facilities, the medical colleges of VMU offer medical education on par with the best in the country. The bachelor‛s program in medicine and surgery and master‛s in a variety of areas are offered giving the students a wide range of specializations to choose from.
Faculty of Dentistry

Dentistry is one of the most important areas in the overall health care system of a country. India is in the forefront in dental care education offering some of the most advanced oral health treatment. VMU offers the Bachelor‛s program in Dental Surgery (BDS) in the Vinayaka Mission‛s Sankarachariyar Dental College (VMSDC) in Salem. Established in the year 1986, VMSDC has evolved over the years both in content and the delivery of the programs in dentistry through a robust system of deploying the best faculty, resources and equipment.
Faculty of Nursing

Nursing is a well developed discipline of health care practice and has grown into a profession of high ethical value and standards all over the world. Nursing education is regulated by the Indian Nursing Council in India. Nursing education offers a wide range of specializations after the bachelor‛s level and an aspiring student can even get into the doctoral program in nursing. India is considered to be one of the pioneers in nursing education and produces the largest number of nursing professionals annually. Indian nursing professionals work all over the world and are held in high regard for their dedication and hardwork.

Faculty of Pharmacy

The Indian pharmaceutical industry is one of the most complex and fast growing industries presenting a wide range of opportunities for specialists in Pharmacy. India is among the countries in the forefront spearheading research, development, manufacture, packaging, marketing, distributing and retailing of pharma products.

VMU offers an undergraduate program in Pharmacy and Master‛s in Pharmacy in a wide range of specializations at Vinayaka Mission‛s College of Pharmacy (VMCP). Established in 1982, VMCP is the oldest institution in the Trust.

Physiotherapy is situated on the Salem Coimbatore national highway, 20 kms away from Salem. It has a campus area of 7 acres and a built up area of 30000 sq. ft. which includes 6 classrooms, 1 central library, 12 laboratories and 1 physiotherapy out patient department. The college offers two programs namely Bachelor of Physiotherapy which is of 4 1/2 years duration and Master of Physiotherapy which is of 2 years duration.

The college is attached to a 500 bedded multi-speciality medical college hospital and a 410 bedded super speciality hospital for clinical exposure. The college has 35 full time teaching faculty and 20 part-time teaching faculty to meet the academic needs of the students. It has 29 non-teaching staff to meet the administrative requirements. The student strength in the undergraduate section is 161 and the same is 100 in the Post Graduate section. An average of 100 outpatients and 120 inpatients receive physiotherapy services daily.

Campus Life
The College of Physiotherapy campus provides a wide variety of services and opportunities to its students to achieve all round development. The Tutor-ward System and Counseling Cell aids the students to face different situations and take the right decisions to reach greater heights. Students are given opportunities to improve their computer skills and English language proficiency after college working hours.

Students utilize the gymnasium and involve themselves in different sporting activities under the supervision of qualified fitness and physical trainers on a regular basis. Intra and inter college sports activities are organized to motivate their interest in sports. The Student Physiotherapy Association functions to express the feedback of the students to the faculty and management with respect to the infrastructure facilities and the academic and non-academic services.

All the students of college meet every Saturday and listen to a faculty presentation and a student presentation which is followed by debates, discussions, games, quiz programs, talent rounds, etc. to make their student life interesting and enjoyable.

The students of the NSS unit involve themselves in varied activities like cleaning, camps, blood donations, tree plantation, health education, etc. in and around the campus. Students are taken for picnics and educational tours regularly. Extra-curricular activities are encouraged widely and special attention is given to improve the skills of talented students.

The students are given opportunities to participate in exhibitions, poster presentations, Rangoli competitions, etc. so that their knowledge and creativity will go hand in hand towards their formation. The students are taken for trekking to Yercaud to improve their fitness and at the same time help them gain experience. Students are taken on visits to different campuses, institutions, hospitals, etc. to observe and understand the needs of different establishments and their role in each set up. As a whole, the campus provides its student a wide variety of facilities and services to mould them into responsible citizens of the country.

Education
Teachers play a vital role in society. They are the key persons who impart knowledge and values to children. To prepare the educators of tomorrow, VMU has formulated that the teachers should be academically competent, morally committed, emotionally integrated, socially conscious and technologically sound and that they should be able to envision the future development of the nation.

The Faculty of Education in VMU is one of the prime areas of academic activity and is aimed at developing educational practice in institutions and improving the quality of the standards of the teaching delivery mechanism. Benchmarked against the best, the curriculum is set to generate a remarkable performance in the individuals and accordingly the expectations from the students are also high.

Bachelors, masters, doctoral and diploma education programs are offered from three of VMUs constituent colleges (VMACE), Salem, Vinayaka Missions Annapoorana Institute of Teacher Training, Salem and of Education (VMCE), Puducherry.
