K S Hegde Medical Academy was established in 1999 by the Nitte Education Trust. The college is named after the visionary and founder, late Justice K S Hegde, former Justice of the Supreme Court of India and former Speaker of the Lok Sabha.The K S Hegde Medical Academy, commonly referred to as KSHEMA, is a medical college located in Deralakatte, near the city of Mangalore. It is managed by the Nitte education trust, which runs a number of professional colleges in the state of Karnataka.

The colleges offer the an MBBS course along with post-graduation courses in the broad specialties of medicine and surgery. The Academy is affiliated with the Nitte University.The college hospital recently opened a super speciality block for Nuclear Medicine, Cardiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Urology, Nephrology, Plastic Surgery, Gastroenterology and Oncology.

Academic Courses & Training
The Institute started admitting students to the undergraduate course, MBBS from the year 1999-2000 and to postgraduate courses like MD, MS and DNB from 2006. Students are offered the best of opportunities for both theoretical as well as practical training with the help of state-of-the-art facilities, valuable clinical material and guidance by experienced teachers and researchers. The Institute is attached to the K S Hegde Hospital so adequate infrastructural support is available for patients and student training.

Affiliations & International Collaborations
K S Hegde Medical Academy is now a constituent unit of the Nitte University and is recognised by the Medical Council of India, Government of India. KSHEMA has signed an agreement of co-operation with the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, Houston, USA for co-operation in research on diseases like malaria and tuberculosis.

The college has established a state-of-the-art regional research centre on communciable diseases in collaboration with the University of Texas Health Sciences, on the campus. The Institute also has a staff exchange and training programme with Maimonides Hospital, Brooklyn, USA.

Since its inception, the Institution has carried a brilliant history of having a host of eminent teachers as its faculty, numerous alumni who have glorified the name of this Institute, not only in our country but across the globe. It has been playing, and continues to play a major role in serving the society at large, not only in terms of providing tertiary health care services to the needy, but also by developing resources in terms of health care providers and researchers.

The decade between 1980 to 1990 changed its face of being a non descript hospital in terms of treating cancer patients to a well known major and a model comprehensive regional center for cancer treatment & research. It was therefore capable of offering contemprory sophisticated diagnostic & therapeutic services to ever increasing numbers of cancer patients, not only from Karnataka state, but also from neighboring states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Maharashtra.

Unfortunately, over a period of time, due to many reasons, there was a progressive decline in terms of staff strength, facilities,and subsequently the services that was provided by the Institution.For almost seventeen years there were no new recruitments. The Institute was almost on the verge of getting de recognized by the Medical Council of India.The Government of Karnataka immediately constituted a Governing Council and in JUNE 1997, the was accorded the Autonomous status, and so was born, the present

This was done with an aim to achieve the objectives of providing comprehensive Under,Graduate & Post Graduate, medical & paramedical education in various subjects & developing the facilities for research, training, screening, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, palliative & preventive care for the society at large.Since then the Institute has shown tremendous progress towards achieving this goal. It has now got a sufficient well trained staff strength. There has been steady progress in the facilities & the healthcare services that are now available at our Institute.

We are proud to say that we are now also able to provide some of the major superspeciality services like Cardiology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Urology, Plastic surgery, Pediatric surgery at our Institute. The A.R.T.Center at K.I.M.S. Hubli has been recognized & is being developed as the NODAL CENTER for the entire North Karnataka as well as surrounding region. The Government of Karnataka has also decided to provide CARDIAC CATH. LAB. to our Institute and also to develop & improve the Institute as REGIONAL CARDIOLOGY CENTER. The institute has also been accorded the status of "INSTITUTE OF EXCELLENCE" and also recognized as a TRAINING CENTER FOR W.H.O. FELLOWSHIP.

The was earlier known as the KARNATAKA MEDICAL COLLEGE, HUBLI. It was established in AUGUST 1957.For initial few years, the college was functioning from a building which is now known as J.G.Commerce College. Later, it was shifted to the present beautiful campus comprising of 100 acres of land, situated on Pune Bangalore National Highway, Vidyanagar, Hubli.

Recently there has been steady progress in the facilities & the healthcare services that are now available at our institute. ADMISSIONS
Admission to any course offered by Nitte University is through an Entrance Test (ET)conducted by it, fulfilling the requirements of UGC and statutory bodies such as MCI,DCI, INC, PCI and AICTE. Entrance Tests are designated as NUPGET and NUUGET forPost-graduate and Under-graduate courses respectively and the designations will alsohave the year of conducting the test for selecting the candidates for admission in thatyear. A notification will be issued by the Nitte University regarding each of the EntranceTest it conducts with all details as per schedule.

This will be published in leading Nationaldailies and will also be uploaded on the University website Onsubmitting the application for Entrance Test a Hall ticket (Test Admission Ticket, TAT) willbe issued to the candidate with TAT Number and Centre name. It carries candidate ssignature, photo and address, Signature of Registrar (Eval) and his seal.

Eligibility criteria for MBBS course
A pass in 12th standard or equivalent examination approved by the Medical Council of India with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects and English as one of the languages of study, with atleast 50% marks in aggregate of optional subjects.

The candidate should have completed 17 years of age as on December 31 of the year of admission.

Admission under NRI quota
The admission under the NRI category is based on merit in the qualifying examination taking into consideration, marks secured in the core subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Foreign nationals are also considered for admission under this quota.

Students seeking admission under the NRI category should submit a separate application to the college in the prescribed format, available at the University office, Mangalore or from the website along with the attested photocopies of the following documents:

10th Std. marks card/pass certificate (for proof of date of birth)
10+2 marks card
Transfer certificate from the institution last attended
Passport and student visa
Passport and Employer"s certificate as proof of NRI status (if the candidate has studied in India)
A demand draft for Rs.650/- towards registration fee favoring Nitte University, payable at Mangalore.

The payment of fee shall be from the Non Resident External (N.R.E) account of the parent.
