About The University
Karachi Medical and Dental College came into existence in November, 1991 with Abbasi Shaheed Hospital as its affiliated hospital, becoming the first Medical College of the Country to be established and run by a City Government. KMDC set new trends in admission, merit being the sole criteria for admission with no quota system or self-financing scheme. KMDC was the first public sector Medical College of Pakistan to initiate an entrance test for admissions. The college is given guidelines by a Governing Body, which works in close liaison with the Academic Council.
In a short span of 13 years, the students of KMDC have achieved academic distinctions. Karachi University positions are invariably taken by KMDC students in annual MBBS & BDS Examination. Out of 43 students of first batch of KMDC, 20 have been successful in postgraduate exams. The postgraduate qualifications achieved by KMDC students are major diplomas like FCPS, MRCP, FRCS instead of minor qualifications.
The Karachi Medical and Dental College is situated at Block "M" North Nazimabad with attached hospital, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital in Nazimabad. Construction of phase II of KMDC was initiated in july 2002 and has eventually brought all basic sciences together in the new campus. With the approval of Governing Body a Learning Resource Centre with modern information technology and Skills Labs are being setup at the college and at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The college has also entered in to the COME (Community oriented medical education) program this year. It is the 5th public sector college of Pakistan to use this modern teaching methodology.
InshaAllah, the college and students will achieve even greater heights in the future and the institution will progress towards becoming a Centre of Excellence. Ameen.
IT is gratifying to note that Karachi Medical & Dental College is functioning smoothly well since its inception. This is the first Medical College of its kind in Pakistan and third in the sub-continent ever established and managed by the Metropolitan Corporation (defunct) now by the "Karachi Government.
It is indeed a pleasure to see that teaching departments, which were temporarily working at old campus F.B. Area, have shifted and started functioning in its permanent site at Block "M" North Nazimabad, Karachi. After the completion of second phase of the building.
The Governing Body of Karachi Medical & Dental College formulates the Admission policy of the college. The students are selected purely on the basis of merit and there is no self-financing scheme. At present, the college is admitting 50 students for MBBS and 25 students for BDS programmes.
Institution is persistently maintaining the excellence education in the form of good results. All the teachers have been very successful in imparting knowledge and training to the young future doctors. The clinical teaching is imparted at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital at Nazimabad.
