Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences

The present KARNATAKA INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES, HUBLI,( K.I.M.S. HUBLI.) was earlier known as the KARNATAKA MEDICAL COLLEGE, HUBLI. It was established in AUGUST 1957.For initial few years, the college was functioning from a building which is now known as J.G.Commerce College. Later, it was shifted to the present beautiful campus comprising of 100 acres of land, situated on Pune Bangalore National Highway, Vidyanagar, Hubli.

Since its inception, the Institution has carried a brilliant history of having a host of eminent teachers as its faculty, numerous alumni who have glorified the name of this Institute, not only in our country but across the globe. It has been playing, and continues to play a major role in serving the society at large, not only in terms of providing tertiary health care services to the needy, but also by developing resources in terms of health care providers and researchers.

The decade between 1980 to 1990 changed its face of being a non descript hospital in terms of treating cancer patients to a well known major and a model comprehensive regional center for cancer treatment & research. It was therefore capable of offering contemprory sophisticated diagnostic & therapeutic services to ever increasing numbers of cancer patients, not only from Karnataka state, but also from neighboring states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Maharashtra.

Unfortunately, over a period of time, due to many reasons, there was a progressive decline in terms of staff strength, facilities,and subsequently the services that was provided by the Institution.For almost seventeen years there were no new recruitments.

The Institute was almost on the verge of getting de recognized by the Medical Council of India.The Government of Karnataka immediately constituted a Governing Council and in JUNE 1997, the then KARNATAKA MEDICAL COLLEGE was accorded the Autonomous status, and so was born, the present KARNATAKA INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES, HUBLI.This was done with an aim to achieve the objectives of providing comprehensive Under Graduate & Post Graduate, medical & paramedical education in various subjects & developing the facilities for research, training, screening, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, palliative & preventive care for the society at large.Since then the Institute has shown tremendous progress towards achieving this goal. It has now got a sufficient well trained staff strength.

There has been steady progress in the facilities & the healthcare services that are now available at our Institute. We are proud to say that we are now also able to provide some of the major superspeciality services like Cardiology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Urology, Plastic surgery, Pediatric surgery at our Institute. The A.R.T.Center at K.I.M.S. Hubli has been recognized & is being developed as the NODAL CENTER for the entire North Karnataka as well as surrounding region. The Government of Karnataka has also decided to provide CARDIAC CATH. LAB. to our Institute and also to develop & improve the Institute as REGIONAL CARDIOLOGY CENTER. The institute has also been accorded the status of INSTITUTE OF EXCELLENCE and also recognized as a TRAINING CENTER FOR W.H.O. FELLOWSHIP.

Education and other Programs

MBBS
150 students are admitted each year to the MBBS course of KIMS Affiliated RGUHS. Our MBBS students are a carefully selected group of remarkably able and intelligent students committed to a high sustained hard work is the norm. What they need is only a little guidance along the path to knowledge. All efforts are made to keep their initiative and curiosity alive by making them active participants in the teaching-learing process. They also have an opportunity to stretch their minds with research during their vacations.

The faculty is willing and eager to provide vent to the wealth of ideas and energy available with this endless stream of extremely curious and committed young people. However, since they skills for the being are trained for practising medicine, we ensure that they do acquire the purpose.Further, the science and craft of medicine should be accompained by a humane approach to illness.

To inculcate the necessary empathy in our students,our curriculum extends beyond medicine, and encroaches on science and phychology.In short, undergraduate medical education is a blend of several streams of competing, and sometimes conflicting, endeavours. We try and make the blend as harmonious as We wish to produce competent and caring doctors while at the same time stimulating the creative abilities of our students It is not surprising that KIMS is Recognized by Medical Council of India 2009 onwards

College of Nursing
Under the section 35(2) of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, act 1994 Ordinance 1997. Governing admission course of study and scheme of examination relating to B.Sc Nursing course as approved by the Syndicate of the meeting referred to above is hereby notified as given in the Schedule here to appended.The above B.Sc Nursing ordinance came into force from the academic year 1997-1998. The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences affiliated the KIMS, College of nursing No: ACA/F/NS-245/2005-06/663.The Government of Karnataka granted the permission to begin the college of nursing as per the Government Order No: HFW/607/MPS/2004 Bangalore dated: 03/06/2005.

MD & MS
All postgraduate students in KIMS are potential teachers and research workers. Hence during their stay at the Institute, they not only acquire competence in a branch of medicine or surgery,but they also savour the romance of teching and research. The small pieces of research which postgaduate students complete are treated as guided introduction to the painfully slow and tedious process of discovery. KIMS is also one of the pioneers in initiating an in-service training programme for postgraduate students. Residents, while providing patient care, also get formal training and education towards their degrees.

Department of Anatomy
The subject Anatomy deals with study of different parts of Human body in detail.

The Department started way back in 1957 at Karnataka Medical College Hubli, in the old building at Vidyanagar, subsequently in 1961 it was shifted to the present building. The Department was lead by Dr.V.G. Kale to begin with from 1957 to 1960.

This department is well established with Undergraduate and Post graduate teaching facilities. Every year one post graduate degree student (MD) and two Post graduate diploma students (DVD) are admitted. Clinical case demonstrations are done at out patients and also in the wards. The students are taught regarding examinations, investigation and management of students. In the department skin Diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, leprosy and Skin Lesions of systemic diseases are examined, investigated and treated. In addition to routine investigations, special investigations like KOH test , Gram Smear, Skin Slit Smear for AFB and Skin Biopsy are done.

In addition to routine treatment of SKIN case, special treatment like Electro cautery, curettage,chemical cautery and cosmetic surgery are also done. Counseling for HIV positive cases and all STD cases, their relatives and friends are also undertaken. Extended Health Education activities in various Schools and Colleges oganized groups and NSS and NCC students and Health check up camps are also conducted regularly. AIDS and Leprosy training is given to medical officers and general practitioners and also paramedical Staff.

T.M.T. Machine is an important diagnostic & prognostic tool in evaluating the chances a patient has of having a coronary event like Angina or Myocardial Infarction ( Heart attack. ) It also helps in assessing the functional capacity of a person. KIMS has two state of art TMT Machines.

This state of art machine is an important tool to visualize the internal structure of the Heart like the valves, the walls, thrombus or growth within the cardiac chambers etc. It can be used to assess the functional capacity of the Heart, congenital or aquired defects of the Heart, status of the blood flow and its pressure through the Heart as well as various blood vessels of the body.

The Cardiology Department of KIMS Hubli has now got two most advanced 2-D Echocardiographic & Colour doppler machines with multi probe options, including the pacdiatric cardiac probe. It is also has one bed side echocardiography machine.
