Katihar Medical College was established in 1987 which has been incorporated by the Muslim religious minority community of Bihar. As a minority educational institution it invokes the provisions of article 30(i) of the constitution of the republic of India. The college primarily intends to augment the facility in higher and professional studies for the youth of Muslim religious minority community. The college has been ideally situated in one of the more backward regions of India at Katihar which has sizable population of Muslim community.

Campus: The campus of the college is located in one single plot of about 55 acres nearly 5 Kilometers away from Katihar Railway Junction on Katihar Purnia road.

The Facilities: The facilities of teaching, hospitals, hostels, laboratories and residential quarters for teachers and others are all located within the campus and total floor area nearly 600000 lac sq. feet

Reservation: More than fifty percent of available seats for admission is reserved for candidates belonging to Muslim religious minority community. The graduate medical curriculum is oriented towards training students to undertake the responsibilities of a Physician of the first contact who is capable of looking after the preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative aspects of medicine. Academic life is fully residential.

The Kosi region in the north of the state of Bihar is spread over two divisions of Purnea and Saharsa and suffers from the lack of development of road, power, education and medical facilities. Extreme economic backwardness has led to ill health and lack of education for the people of this region. Meritorious students of the region in general and Muslim youths in particular can ill afford to go elsewhere for medical, technical and other professional education. Moreover the common man, the ailing people of the area could not afford to go to distant places for specialized treatment.

In view of the aforesaid, there has always been a crying need for a medical college and a hospital in this part of Bihar which has a Muslim population of about 40%, most of whom exist below the poverty line. To meet this requirement, Patna established the Katihar Medical College at in 1987 under the provisions of Article 30 (i) of the Constitution of India.

ANATOMY
The department of Anatomy is located in the ground floor of the college building and is one of the most impressive departments of the college. Each academic year the department welcomes 60 undergraduate students and 2 postgraduate students. The teaching faculty of the department comprises several learned and eminent personalities in the field of Anatomy.

The teachers work in concord to bring about an excellent teaching environment at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A very good teacher student relation is maintained. 6 junior Residents are present at any time in the department and they are also actively involved in imparting training to the undergraduate students.

The lectures on Anatomy are taken in the lecture hall which is well equipped with audiovisual amenities. The lecture theatre has provision of comfortable seating for students. Two demonstration rooms are present with seating capacity of 50 students each. The tutorial and demonstration classes are held in them.

The seminar room cum library of the department is very impressive. Postgraduate teaching programmes are held round the year on a regular basis. An outstanding array of books are available for members of the teaching faculty.

The seminar room is equipped with printing and scanning facilities. High speed broadband internet connection is provided to the department. Postgraduate students with personal laptops are also allowed to connect to the college internet for research and thesis writing purposes. Overhead projectors and slide projectors are also provided to the students when they present seminars.

The histology laboratory is well equipped with a large numbers of light microscopes of high quality and fine histological slide preparations are used to teach histology to the students. Binocular microscopes with external display connectivity are present in the histology laboratory. A large collection of coloured histology charts are put up on the walls of this laboratory which the students find very useful during practical and demonstration classes.

A separate research laboratory is used solely by the postgraduate students. Histological procedures are demonstrated to the postgraduate students by the teachers in this laboratory. Postgraduate students do their research work for thesis writing purpose in this laboratory.

The department boasts of an impressive dissection hall. It is neatly setup, clean and has a very hygienic dissection environment. The department takes great care in meticulously embalming and storing the cadavers. The cadavers are stored in stainless steel tanks containing preservative fluid prepared from double filtered water. An articulated skeleton is always present during dissection classes. Lockers are provided to the students who wish to avail them.

The department takes immense pride and pleasure in possessing an extremely impressive museum. The museum contains articulated human skeletons, anatomical specimens and models and above all a fine collection of embryological specimens with birth defects. A well stacked collection of bones is present in the museum. Most importantly the museum is catalogued.

From the teaching point of view, the department strictly follows a teaching calendar in which the topics to be taught are displayed in a date wise sequence. This not only helps the teachers to complete the syllabus but also the students are benefited from it during their personal revision. Students are evaluated by means of continuous assessments on a regular basis and by means of periodical assessments. The teachers monitor the performance of each and every student very carefully and are always ready to provide impromptu solutions to their problems.

University Buildings
The Government of Bombay lent the two-storied building belonging to the middle school situated in Aurangpura (New Zilla Parishad) with its annexes. Until such time as the University is able to construct its own buildings on the University campus. It was proposed to utilize the existing building for the office. The meeting of the University bodies, for accommodating the University departments and library and for holding some of the post graduates classes.

Available land area
Katihar Medical College & Hospital is situated in a total area of 24.49 acres with Emergency Department at the main road and other departments within the campus. The college campus is surrounded on one side by District Women Hospital (known as Lady Lyoll Hospital) with an area of 15 acres and adjacent to the main entrance of the college there is Tuberculosis Demonstration and Training Center.

Research
Katihar Medical College, located on the main campus, conducts and promotes research on natural therapies and natural medicines and works to advance the knowledge of issues surrounding research in natural medicine. The Institute provides a full range of research and informational services to support experimental, developmental and outcomes research.

Katihar Medical College Institute Serves the public by conducting and promoting research on natural therapies and to advance the knowledge of complementary / alternative medicine. SNMCRI provides scientific evidence to the empirical findings experienced, documented, and practiced by individuals world wide: that there are fundamental and scientific reasons to the effectiveness of natural therapeutics. The opportunity now exists for naturopathic physicians, researchers and academicians to demonstrate scientifically the medicinal value of complementary / alternative medicine.

Our biomedical research programs include human subjects research, basic sciences research, public health projects, epidemiological studies, and quality assurance of natural products.

Achievement
During year 2004-2005, S. N. Medical College & Hospital is celebrating its 150th Foundation year (1854-2004) and on this prestigious occasion, all faculty members, employees and students have strived hard for the improvement in available facilities for patients and students and for improving the overall image of the institution in minds of the people.

Due to ever-increasing number of private nursing homes and clinics and due to the dominance of Private qualified and non-qualified practitioners, there was a decrease in patient input during past few years. Along with this due to the deficiency of hospital staff, and consequent irregularity in the working, the image of this institute had also deteriorated among the community. But due to the sincere efforts of all who are involved, the situation have now shown a positive improvement and patients have again started showing their trust on the facilities of this institute. The newer initiatives undertaken and achievements during this year (2004-2005) can be briefly outlined as follow..

Admission Process
The Uttar Pradesh Combined Pre Medical Test (UPCPMT) is conducted for admission of MBBS/BDS/BHMS/BAMS/BUMS students in the medical colleges of Uttar Pradesh.

The governing authority for the UPCPMT is Director General of Medical Education and Training Uttar Pradesh. However this Directorate does not conduct the CPMT examination on its own; it gives the responsibility to any one of the Medical College/Unitersity that comes under its preview for conducting of CPMT.

Candidates who qualify in the CPMT written examination are required to appear in counseling session in the month of July. The directorate holds the entire responsibly of conducting the counseling (online) and allotment of seats.

Medical Courses
For MBBS degree, each year total of 123 students are enrolled in the Medical College, in fixed atio from Uttar Pradesh and All India Entrance Examinations. The graduate course is spread over four and half cademic years divided into three phrases.

Duration is one year (I & II Semesters). During this period students are taught subjects ofAnatomy,Physiology and Biochemistry. Students are also introduced to Community medicine. Examination is held in Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry. On clearing all the three subjects the students enter the Para-clinical phase Duration is one and half years (Semester III to V). This period entails the subjects of Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmaclogy, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology and Social & Preventive Medicine / Community Medicine. After clearing all these subjects in the University Examination (II Prof.) students can appear in next University examination i.e. final Prof-Part I.

Duration is two academic year after II professional examin-ation. During this period the subjects like Orthopaedics, Opthalom-ology, E.N.T., Community Medicine, Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatrics are being taught. The concurrent phase is important in the basic understanding of Clinical subjects. The university examination are conducted in two phases i.e. part I & part II , The teaching and training requirement includes all aspects of patient care and Health. Final Prof- part I examination includes first three subjects and next four subjects are considered in Final Prof-part II exams.
