About Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical College
In the early 1960s when the entire world was enticed by the resonant " I have a dream " oration of Martin Luther King Jr., a small group of dedicated and enterprising rural folk in kolenchery along with the progressive leaders of the church, laid the foundation stone in the year 1967.

The dreams of our great founders were materialized in the form of a society with the objective to engage in activities, which will result in the development and upliftment of the rural areas and facilities in Kolenchery. Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical Mission hospital was established in the year 1970.

From the humble beginning of a 100 bedded hospital, today it has grown into a super speciality hospital with 1050 beds with a reputed Medical college, Nursing college, Nursing school, Para medical courses, Diploma programmes for doctors, Superspeciality departments in almost all branches, mordern investigative and therapeutic equipments and facilities and specialized social service departments.

Bed strength
The hospital is equipped with 1000 beds. Of these, 500 are in the general category and meet the requirements stipulated by the Medical Council of India (MCI) for the teaching departments. The remaining beds belong to the private, semiprivate and the unitary wards of the super-speciality departments.

Clinical departments
The college has access to all the clinical and super-speciality departments of the Medical Mission Hospital, under the able guidance of senior professors and clinicians. Since 1972, the hospital has been recognised by the MCI for conducting Compulsory Rotating Resident Internship programme. The operation theatres are well equipped and meet the requirements of the MCI for training medical interns. Many of the departments also have post graduate programmes for Diploma of the National Board of Examinations.

The fact that this institution is credited with the first C.T scanner, the first open psychiatric ward and the first research paper on leptospirosis in Kerala, is proof of the innovative spirit and drive of the medical faculty.

Computerised information management
MMH has highly integrated hospital information system to assist patient care. The patient centered system takes care of patients from admission through discharge. Patient related information like ward and theatre supplies, procedure details, laboratory tests, results, pharmacy medicines, etc are all made available at the ward or the physician's computer.

This system also has the facility to make DICOM compatible images like CT, MRI, X Ray and Ultra Sound available on the physician's computer system. It has also a tele-radiology module, whereby the referring physician can study the medical images and make notes over the internet. The hospital has more than 100 computers on its network, Apart from patient care, it has computerised nearly every aspect of hospital information such as stock, finance, human resources, asset management etc.

Nursing and supportive services

  • Experienced and well trained senior nurses are on call for specific patent care areas as per the nursing council norms. The well disciplined school of nursing run by the mission, produces qualified and efficient junior nurses each year to meet the rising demand for nursing personnel.
  • The medical college is situated by the side of NH 49, connecting Kochi and Madurai, on a 40 acre campus sprawled across the scenic countryside. The city of Kochi and its international airport are less than 30 kms away.
  • Well experienced and devoted teachers have been appointed in full strength as per the recommendations of the MCI. Dr. C. Radhaknshrian is the Dean.
  • Pre-clinical departments
  • The departments of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry are housed in the newly constructed buildings with a floor area of around 75,000 sq. ft.
  • The three spacious lecture theatres are provided with custom designed furniture and modem audio-visual equipment. All equipment as per the norms of the MCI, have been installed in the laboratories. The anatomy museum possesses a large collection of indexed wet and dry specimens, imported models, charts and slides.
  • Para-clinical departments
  • The departments of pharmacology, forensic medicine, community medicine, microbiology and pathology are functional with adequate staff and equipment. Construction of the second block of buildings to permanently house these and other departments, is progressing on a war footing.
  • Library
  • The central library possesses all recent editions of textbooks and reference books. The library subscribes to several Indian and international journals, and has online connection to the Internet. The student reading area provides comfortable seating for over hundred students.
Hostels
Separate hostels for men and women with mess facilities are available in the campus. Basic furniture is provided in the rooms. Students are expected to bring mattress, pillows and bed linen. Students will be under the disciplinary control of the resident wardens and the Principal, who is the chief warden.

Accessing information
  • The parent of each student will be given a unique username and password, along with the URL to a website which will provide the following information:
  • Attendance during the course of his/her study will be shown for each department comparative to the maximum hours required; 80% of maximum attendance is required for the student to appear for the final examinations.
  • Internal test scores will also be shown comparative to the maximum marks, as also the total, which will be carded forward to the final examination. The marks that are carded forward will be a percentage of the maximum marks obtained.
  • Student achievements in sports etc. will also be informed via the website.
  • Any serious warning issued to the student can be viewed by the parent.
  • Any other information relevant to the Medical College will be shown from time to time.
  • This information will be made available periodically, so that the parent can have an up-to-date view of the student's progress. This information is viewable only against logging into the student area using the username and password issued, the password can be changed by the parent whenever needed.
Other facilities
  • There is a 240 KV substation on the campus and a 24 hour standby generator. There are two wells with perennial supply of water. Purified water is available round the clock. Environment friendly incineration, categorised waste disposal and bio-gas plant using hospital waste are the various facilities available for waste disposal.
  • There is a resident chaplain and a 24 hour open chapel within the hospital. Other places of worship are in close proximity to the campus.
  • A well equipped gym and other facilities for indoor and outdoor games are provided within the campus. Facilities to develop individual skills and talents in arts and cultural activities are also available.
  • In addition to the State Bank of Travancore in the campus, many banks with ATM facilities are present within walking distance from the college.

Health care
  • Compulsory medical examination is mandatory for all students at the time of admission. Parents and guardians are expected to take corrective steps advised, for any health problems detected during these medical examinations. Immunization against tetanus, typhoid and hepatitis B are compulsory for all students, unless an authentic certificate of previous immunization is produced.
  • Students are expected to meet the costs of vaccinations, medical examinations, routine investigations and any treatment advised thereof.

Rules and regulations
The rules and regulations of the Mission in general, are binding to the staff and students. A copy of the rules with particular reference to the students, will be given to each student at the time of admission. Students are expected to abide by the discipline of the institution. The Principal / Dean will be the highest authority in all student matters.
