Dean's Message
As Mayo Medical School (MMS) celebrates 40 years of excellence in medical education, I have the distinct honor of serving as its dean.

MMS is uniquely positioned as the undergraduate education arm of Mayo Clinic. One of five schools of the College of Medicine, we live our primary value, "The needs of the patient come first." Mayo's unique style of care brings teams of experts together to provide high-quality, affordable and compassionate care to each patient.

Some unique aspects of MMS:

  • Faculty-to-student ratio. Mayo Clinic has 3,700 physicians and scientists on staff, the majority of whom have appointments in the College of Medicine. This creates one of the highest faculty-to-student ratios in the country.
  • Learning environment. Mayo Clinic is the largest multidisciplinary, multispecialty, integrated medical group practice in the world, seeing over 1,000,000 patients each year. Students are placed in meaningful contact with patients nearly every day starting at week one. We offer educational opportunities at each of Mayo Clinic's group practice campuses in Rochester, Minnesota; Jacksonville, Florida; and Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona; as well as Mayo Clinic Health System in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
  • Affordable tuition. MMS offers one of the lowest tuition rates of all U.S. private medical schools and students receive scholarships to help defray costs.
  • Integrated libraries. Students have access to an integrated physical and digital library system, with more than 92,000 book titles, 5,000 electronic journals and 600 print journal subscriptions; in addition to resources available through DOCLINE@.
  • Translational research. Mayo's Center for Translational Science Activities offers students cutting-edge training in clinical and translational research, as well as the basic sciences.
  • Experiential learning. Our students have access to exceptional learning facilities, including a state-of-the-art Simulation Center and Procedural Skills Laboratory.
We sit on the cusp of health care transformation. MMS has the opportunity to help redefine the model of medical education for the future. In collaboration with Arizona State University, we are making plans to open a branch campus in Arizona over the next few years; focusing on the science of health care delivery.

Mayo Clinic is about to celebrate its sesquicentennial year. We're building on an exceptionally firm foundation and are committed to educating the next generation of physicians and improving health care for the 21st century.

Please consider joining us as we prepare the next generation of leaders in health care.

Excellence through Innovation and Compassionate Care
History

Tradition and Heritage

For more than 150 years, Mayo Clinic has been known throughout the world for its legacy of excellence through innovation and compassionate care. Mayo remains steadfast to these founding principles.

With the arrival of Dr. William Worrell Mayo to Minnesota in 1855, medical practice in the United States underwent a radical transformation. With his two sons, Will and Charles, joining the practice in the 1880s, Mayo Clinic, the first and largest integrated medical practice was born.

Enduring hallmarks of Mayo Clinic medicine include healthcare that is:
  • patient-centered
  • collaborative
  • informed and improved by research and medical education
  • committed to professional growth by making the best use of the latest advances for the improvement of public health

Mayo Clinic Campuses
Mayo Medical School is an integral part of Mayo Clinic, the country's largest private group practice based in three campuses in Jacksonville, Florida., Rochester, Minnesota, and Scottsdale, Arizona. At all Mayo Clinic sites, the mission is to provide the best care to every patient every day through integrated clinical practice, education, and research.

Affiliation with regional medical clinics in the Mayo Health System gives students access to additional clinical training and patient care experiences, particularly in rural medicine.
