About The University
Founded in 1957 and inaugurated in Rabat in 1959 by late King Mohammed V, the Mohammed V university ranks as the dean of modern universities in Morocco.

As a national leader in providing educational excellence to a large number of students, the university takes pride in being the home university of his Majesty Mohammed VI and some of the Royal Family. It has also trained many of the leaders of the Moroccan Government and graduates of different professions such as teachers, researchers, engineers, attorneys, managers. whose work reflects the level of excellence the university has always promoted for its students.
The university has an outstanding place amongst Moroccan universities given its particular role in fostering for years, and till 1975, many educational institutions in cities like Fes, Tetouan, Tangier, Kenitra and Casablanca which have now independent universities.

In 1993 the University grew in two separate campuses : Mohammed V University Agdal and Mohammed V university-Souissi.

  • The UM5A capitalizes on its faculty and its administrative and technical staff who have made tremendous efforts implementing the LMD reform since 2003. They have conducted this reform on the basis of the university priorities and shared values :
  • Being committed to offer to its students and partners a diversified bundle of quality study programs many of them with professionalisation
  • Aspiring to maintain a quality assurance that meets standards and best practices found in major universities throughout the world.
  • Helping students to develop their capacities to their highest potential.
  • Consolidating the international exchange by developing relationships and partnerships with other foreign universities
  • Increasing the number of actions that meet the needs of its socio-economic environment
  • Embracing new technologies to advance the creative potentials of its faculty, administrative staff and students and promoting innovative and responsible uses of technology for the realization of a modern University.

Higher education is based on the following principles:
1. It is taught with respect to the Islamic principles and values which contribute to its development and evolution.

2. It is open to all citizens satisfying the requirements on the basis of equal chances.

3. It is exercised according to the principles of human rights, tolerance, freedom of thought, creation and innovation, in the strict respect of academic rules and values of objectivity, scientific rigour and intellectual honesty

4. It is put under the responsibility of the state which ensures its planning, organization, development, regulation and orientation according to the economic, social and cultural needs of the nation which defines the national politics in this field jointly with the scientific community, labour and economic world, in addition to local authorities and regions in particular.

5. It continues the development of teaching in Arabic language in various fields of training; and the mobilization of necessary tools for teaching, besides research in language and cultural Amazigh; and proficiency in foreign languages according to a specific planning for the realization of these objectives.

Higher education consists of public higher education and private higher education.
Its goal is:
  • The training of competencies and their promotion; in addition to the development and the diffusion of information in all fields of knowledge
  • The contribution to the scientific, technical, professional, economic and cultural progress of the nation taking into account economic and social development needs.
  • The development of science, techniques and skills through research and innovation.
  • The promotion of Moroccan cultural heritage.

Public Higher Education
Public higher education is ensured in universities as well as in institutions of higher education not affiliated to universities.The courses are taught in faculties, schools of engineers preceded by preparatory classes, schools and high institutes; in addition to institutions for managers and specialized technicians training or equivalent. Public higher education can also be taught in special cycles for the preparation to practice a job either in universities or in existing high institutions or in institutions that will be created for this purpose.

Universities
The major missions of universities are:
  • The contribution to the intensification of the Islamic and national identity;
  • The initial training and the in- service training;
  • The development and the diffusion of knowledge and culture;
  • The preparation of young people to be integrated in the active life by the development of experience;
  • The scientific and the technological research;
  • The realisation of expertise;
  • The contribution to the global development of the state;
  • The contribution to the development of universal values.

The normal vocation of universities is to ensure all types of education and initial training; in addition to the preparation and the distribution of related diplomas.
They organize continuous training to both people who are or not engaged in active life in order to satisfy personal and collective needs.

The University Council
The University Council is the highest decision-making body of University Mohammed V-Agdal. It has all the required authorities and attributions for the university management and has broad missions to carry out which are especially related to the administrative, academic and financial affairs. The president of the University is the head of the Council. He prepares and executes its recommendations, receives proposals and establishes the agenda of the Councils meetings. A special meeting will be called by petition, presented to the president, of at least third of the total membership of the Council, whenever a necessity is perceived for the interest of the university

The Council has the legal right to deliberate in the presence of at least half of its members, but if this legal quorum is not achieved, a meeting can be legally held after eight days without considering the condition of the quorum.
The Councils decisions are taken by vote of the majority of members attending the meeting, but in case of equal vote, the part to which the president sides is the preponderant.

The University Council has the power:
  • to undertake all the necessary measures for the university governance promotion;
  • to suggest all forms of training reform and take the necessary pedagogical measures targeting the improvement of training quality;
  • to establish its internal regulation and that of the University;
  • to give its opinion about the proposals of accreditation presented by the affiliated institutions;
  • to approve the project of studies and research courses creation,
  • to adopt the budget project of the University;
  • to define the procedures to endeavour for students orientation and information promotion and encourage the organisation of Cultural and sportive activities;
  • to recommend the proper measures for laureates professional insertion;
  • to approve the agreements established with private higher education institutions concerning the course or courses accredited;
  • to decide, in initial education or continuous education, the creation of diplomas which are suggested by the institutions councils and define the procedures of their preparation and the requirements for their obtainment;
  • to suggest the creation of other institutions;
  • to approve the establishment of Centres suggested by the councils of the affiliated institutions;
  • to accept donations;
  • to direct the academic affairs of the university.
The Council delegates the administrative and financial attributions to the Management Council, which is composed of an equal number of nominated members and elected members. The Council can also delegate some of its attributions to the president or to one of the committees affiliated to the Council. These committees are either permanent or ad-hoc committees composed of the university council members expressing their willingness to work within committees according to their choice.

RESEARCH
University MohammedV-Agdal is largely renowned for the intensity, quality and diversity of its research. Its scientific output equals the quarter of the national production carried out thanks to the scientific competence of its human potential involving approximately 1000 professors-researchers, who conduct their activities of research within 113 accredited research structures (laboratories and independent teams), and has seven centers of excellence and nine poles of competence.Up to the 2004 research assessment by the UM5A, the fruits of the UM5A research include:

The average of 440 yearly publications (339 international publications and 101 national publications per year).
  • The average of 3 yearly publications for each research structure
  • One publication each two years and half by teachers-researchers if we count all teachers-researchers of the UM5A.
  • This rate equals one publication and a half per year if we count only teachers researchers in the field of science and technology (because these teachers are the ones who produce all the international publications of the UM5A).
  • Innovation and research valorization income represents 17% of the total budget
  • 11.5% of research entities took out at least one patent.

As part of its policy of encouragement and promotion of students, the University Mohammed V Souissi organized, July 15, 2008, at the Faculty of Educational Sciences - Rabat, the traditional graduation ceremony.
