The nation's best medical schools are known for providing the highest quality medical education, research, patient services and community outreach. At New Jersey Medical School, these priorities are combined with a commitment to constant innovation and progress as we keep our mission, vision and values in mind.
As a result, NJMS is experiencing remarkable growth in these critical mission areas. Such progress is truly a mark of our success as a medical school. Some of our most recent achievements include:
Education - The preclinical curriculum employs many different teaching modalities including lecture and small group activities such as team based learning (TBL) to provide our students with an important fund of knowledge. Early exposure to clinical medicine is gained through a Physicians Core Program that spans the first two years. Medical interviewing, physical examination, ethics and communication skills are some of the topics covered in the Core Program. Considerable emphasis is placed on developing professionalism and humanism traits as well as a commitment to community and cultural diversity throughout the four years of medical school.
Research - Research funding at NJMS has doubled since 1996. During fiscal year 2004, funding reached an unprecedented $103.9 million - a 17 percent increase over the previous year. This funding is coupled with an impressive list of groundbreaking discoveries by a world-class cadre of researchers.
Patient Care - In addition to employing state-of-the-art treatment tools and innovations, clinical care at NJMS is provided in a variety of in- and out-patient settings. These facilities offer patients unparalleled care in convenient and welcoming environments. At the same time, a focus on specialty areas of medicine - including infectious diseases, cardiovascular science, neurological and visual sciences, cancer and trauma - ensures that we are meeting a wide range of patient needs.
Community Outreach - Our longstanding ties to the community are being strengthened by a variety of support programs. In addition to providing vital healthcare information and services to the community through neighborhood outreach programs and health centers, NJMS continues to expand and support initiatives that provide career opportunities and help our neighbors achieve personal success.
All of these endeavors are critical in moving NJMS forward as we distinguish ourselves as one of nation's leading public medical schools. We're on the move at NJMS and we want you to join us.

The mission of our admissions committee is to select a talented and diverse class of students who vigorously contribute to and care for the school community and society as a whole. In selecting candidates we give balanced consideration to a range of attributes such as academic excellence, life experiences, resilience, personal growth and maturity; as well as various other dimensions such as socioeconomic status, languages spoken, gender, race and ethnicity. Qualities of integrity, humanism, and passion are considered as these factors may influence an applicant's potential to succeed in medical school and are critical to their growth as physician-leaders.
We are committed to fostering diversity in the medical profession and actively recruit students with varied backgrounds and experiences. Our focus on cultural competency ensures that students who graduate from NJMS will be well-prepared to take care of an increasingly diverse patient population.

Our students influence the future of medicine. An actively engaged admissions committee ensures that the students we accept are not only academically accomplished but also personally qualified to be effective, compassionate physicians of the 21st century. Our students engage in a rigorous academic program that integrates classroom learning and clinical experience from the beginning of the first year. Students also have ample opportunity to pursue cutting-edge research with our faculty and hone their clinical skills through a multitude of community outreach programs. As part of the nation's largest health sciences university, we offer the benefits of a large institution while at the same time fostering a cohesive student body among each class of 170 students.
NJMS is committed to educating humanistic, culturally competent physicians who will respect every patient regardless of race, ethnicity, economic status or language. Core values serve as the framework for learning for all NJMS students and include not only clinical and academic excellence, integrity, ethical and professional behavior but also compassion.
We are committed to fostering diversity in the medical profession and actively recruit students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in medicine. The Hispanic Center of Excellence, established in 1990, recruits students as well as faculty, building both the medical and educational pipeline for students underrepresented in medicine
