It was established in 1968 as the first medical college of North Bengal. Originally envisioned by Dr.Bidhanchandra Roy, the planning was executed by Ajit Panja, the then state health minister. Prof. Ajit Kr. Duttagupta was the first official principal of the college which was then known as North Bengal University Medical College. NBUMC was rechristened in August 1978 to North Bengal Medical College & Hospital and the administrative control went from North Bengal University to Govt. of West Bengal.Since 2003 admission batch, it is formally affiliated to the newly formed West Bengal University of Health Sciences.

The university was shifted to its own campus in 1995.The university is situated on the banks of river "Girna" and the campus of the university is spread over a hilly terrain of 650 acres of land. Each building of the campus is well connected through tar roads constructed by the University itself. The University is also well connected to Jalgaon City by Asian Highway No. 46. The transport modes like City Bus Service, Auto Rickshaws are available for employees, students, visitors.

The campus beautification is maintained through lawns and planting various trees on the campus. More than two lac trees have been planted to conserve the natural beauty and environment of the campus, for which the university was selected for the Award Government of Maharashtra and Priyadarshini Vriksha Mitra (IPVM) the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India, New Delhi.

The Maharashtra State Electricity Board has installed a separate sub-station to cater to the needs of electricity on the campus. As an alternative source of electricity supply, three 125 KVs Diesel Generators are installed on the campus. The university is approximately 10Kms away from the Jalgaon city. The pollution free hilly terrain provides natural ambience which creates a perfect environment for study. All Departments are equipped with all required by students/visitors.

The university is imparting education to students, through various courses at under graduate, post graduate, doctoral and post doctoral level, under 09 faculties, which includes Science, Engg. & Technology , Education , Medicine & Pharmacy , Ayurvedic Medicine , Arts & fine arts, Commerce and Management, Mental, Moral & Social Sciences, Law faculty .

The University has developed a model Examination System and is one of the few Universities in the State for conducting examinations regularly and declaring the results well in time as per the Maharashtra Universities Act, 1994. The action plan of the University in this regard is serving as a prototype to other Universities in the State.

To improve the efficiency of work most of the functioning of is computerized. The modern management techniques are used for easy and user friendly administration.

Prof. Dr. S. F. Patil took over as the second Vice Chancellor of this University on 14th Aug. 1996. During his tenure two new academic departments viz. Department of Comparative Languages & Literature and Department of Information Technology were started on the campus. took over as the third Vice Chancellor of the University on 14th August, 2001. Under his able and visionary leadership University progressed at a faster pace towards excellence. He encouraged students and teachers to undertake Water Harvesting programs on the campus, and as a outcome of this, small bands were constructed by the students.

Inspite of the fact that we have small number of faculty members in our Academic Schools/Departments, our faculty on the campus has till date successfully completed many funded by various funding agencies. We have developed and transferred four technologies through University-Industry linkage and made some more ready for transfer.

In a very short period of time the university has gained name and fame on National and International levels. This university has also acquired the prestigious 2(f) & 12(b) recognition from the UGC. The university has been re-accredited with 'B' (CGPA 2.88) grade duly honoured by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Banglore. When NAAC committe assessed the functioning of the teaching and non teaching departments of the University, awarded the 4 star status in 2001 and reaccredited in December 2008 as B (CGPA 2.88) grade.

Keeping in mind the need for self-reliance in future, university undertook the. 95,000 plantlets were planted which are growing up fast. This project was awarded with VANASHREE award in the year 2002. Honourable Vice-Chancellor received this award from the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh took over as the fourth regular Vice Chancellor of the university on 22nd Aug. 2006. Dr. K. B. Patil is a well known personality in the academia as well as amongst the mathematicians.

EDUCATION

Young men and women who seek to heal must first walk through fire. North Bengal Medical College provides the perfect atmosphere for the budding doctors guiding them through the years from the crucible of medical courses merciless training to the demanding hours of internship.

Established in 1968, it is the largest healthcare facility in the North Bengal region of West Bengal serving as a tertiary referral institute. It is one of the ten government medical colleges in West Bengal.

The college is affiliated to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences and recognised by the Medical Council of India. It offers the MBBS course at the undergraduate level and postgraduate degrees in various medical specialties.

The college hospital sees a high turnout of patients from its large hinterland comprising the entire North Bengal zone and also the surrounding states of Bihar and north east India. Ever since its inception, North Bengal Medical College has been playing an instrumental role in the healthcare scene of the region.

Administration
The grand administrative building of NMU hosts 17 different sections for keen and effective administration. The administration is the main co-ordinator between academic departments on the campus, affiliated colleges/Institutions and administrative wings of the University. Each section of administration functions smoothly under the valuable guidance of Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor and direct supervision of the Registrar for efficiently executing the decisions taken by various competent authorities.

The submission of various proposals to appropriate Govt. bodies for approval of teaching, non-teaching and staff establishment is also the responsibility of administrative staff. The Maharashtra Universities Act, 1994 has given the reins of the University administration in the hands of teachers and technocrats so that objectives of higher education, namely excellence and efficiency are achieved at a higher rate to meet the challenges of 21st century and aspirations of students of NMU as well as society. The University has a central computer facility with LAN server, terminals, printers, scanners, and photo copying machines to carry out examination, financial and administrative work. All work related to recruitment of employees, admission of students, examination and finance is computerized. Computer culture has percolated for routine administrative purposes in administration.

Computer literacy training for staff, emphasis on enhancing the personal efficiency, management skills development program has helped a lot in improving the administrative and management processes of NMU. For the administrative convenience the total work is divided into 17 sections. Dr. M. V. Baride, registrar of the university, is currently heading the band wagon of overall administration. Here are the brief details of activities and functioning of these administrative sections.

Computer Section (Exam)The functional role of this Section is to provide Cetralised Computing Facility and develop inhouse software to carry day to day work of the University. Information supplied by this section is consumed by all most all sections of the University. The prime responsibility of the section is provide information like Result, Merit List, Admit Card,etc and developing the software for in-house requirements.

We take pride to state that representatives of other universities in the state like Kolhapur, A'bad, Mumbai, Nagpur have visited our computer section to study our computerised Examination System. Total 80 computers are in the control of this Section. And another mentionable thing is that all the softwares required by the section are developed in the section itself, like Data Processing Unit. Examination System is 100% computerised.

This center has developed a novell computerised CAP (Central Assessment Program) System where all work related to result is done at CAP center simultaniously, so that results are declared within stipulated period of time.

Health Center
To keep students, resident and non-resident employees, and their families healthy, happy and joyful, a health center has been constructed in the campus. The primary duties of the health center are to provide instant medical cure to employees and students on the campus. The center is equipped with many advanced medical instruments like ECG machine, X-RAY machine, Nebulizer, Autoclave, medical refrigerator, Sphygmomanometer and important surgical instruments and other facilities required by an upto date health center. There are two patient wards(general and special), Intensive Care Unit(ICU) Operation theatre, consulting room, dressing room, dispensary room, pathological laboratory. Health center also owns an ambulance for shifting patients to other centers.
The Health Center has started its functioning from 30thApril, 1998. Dr. S. G. Narkhede is the Head Officer of the Center.To assist him there are two nurses, one compounder-cum clerk and one ward boy appointed by the university.

  • Yearly Medical checkup for all school students of Central School
  • Yearly Medical checkup for all hostelites

  • In the academic year 2001-2002 near about 2770 patients.
  • In the academic year 2000-2001 near about 2870 patients.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
  • 100% target achieved in National Pulse Polio Program conducted during the year 1998-99 to 2001-02 at NMU, Campus.
  • Conducted medical check up of all students of Girls and Boys Hostel every year.
  • The Health Centre had provided necessary medical facilities to Cycle Rally organized by Sane Guruji Sanskar Kendra, Jalgaon from Amalner to Palghar (550 Kms.) in October, 1999.
  • The Health Centre had provided necessary medical facilities to Motorcycle Rally organized by Gandhi Tatvadnyan Kendra, Dhule from Dhule to Anandvan (500 Kms.) in the year 2001.
