Introduction
Founded in 1900 by the name of Odessa State Medical University

Government university.
Upgraded and change to Odessa National Medical University in August 2010, and thanks to the rector of the university. Because he is one of the closest friends of new elected Ukrainian President Yanukovich and the rector helped him a lot during his recent election campaign, so Yanukovich promised to grant the status of 'National' to the university. Although the university have a lot of old professor and did meet the requirement of status upgradation.

Listed by World Health Organization, International Association of Universities, European University Association, Medical Councils of almost all major countries, including USA, UK, Europe, India & others. A Medical Licensing Examination must be passed in each of the above areas before a student may begin medical practice or residency training.

OSMU is a member of Bologne Process (Single European area of higher education). However, their qualification are accepted as transfer credit to any European Medical Universities.

OSMU is the only university of Ukraine, which is a member of MEDINE (Medical EDucation IN Europe).

Starting August 2010, this university is known as Odessa National Medical University.

Medium of Study: Russian/Ukrainian/English. From year 2010, Russian medium is gradually replaced by Ukrainian medium.

Odessa State Medical University is the first university in Ukraine which started medical education in the English medium in 1996. In 2005-2010, OSMU was awarded with a medal for the development of an English curriculum by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Well known Scientist worked/graduated/live in Odessa: There are few Nobel's prize winners like Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov (The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1908), Selman Abraham Waksman (The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1952), Albert Calmette (Nomination for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1933), Max Rubner (Nomination for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1912), Podwyssozky (Nomination for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1904), V P Filatov(Nomination for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1950).

Foreign Students
Races and Origin Countries Arabs, Nigeria, China and former USSR countries' citizens. Although they claim that they have students from Canada, Singapore, Korean and others, but they are actually Indian who immigrated to that particular countries or to Ukraine. They are not actual local citizens.

Teaching Materials All the literatures in English.
Teaching Staff some can speak English very fluent . Some time they will mixed with Russian.

School Activities
Clinical Base: The clinical centers of the University have 9648 patient beds. These clinical centers, which include 35 hospitals. If you can't speak Russian or Ukrainian, you will not going to survive here even you hire a translator. Nobody in Odessa are willing to speak in English with you.

Library with a total stock of more than one million books from the mid to late 1900s, with some in English.

Students' Polyclinic: Provides medical aid to students , even if the student purchased the mandatory insurance.

Four and Half Hostels 4 equipped and environmental hostel and 1 hostel half part share with a facu.

Sport Complex with a indoor & outdoor areas utilizing the latest of Soviet 1960s technology. Facilities are not free to use.

Students': Club/Cultural and Scientific Societies few of it are active as of 2010.

Students' Recreation Center: Located on the coast of the Black Sea.

Odessa State Medical University Curriculum
Odessa State Medical University is the first university of Ukraine which started medical education in English medium in 1996. In 2005, OSMU was awarded with a medal for the development of modern model for teaching the English speaking students by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.Only university of Ukraine which provides post-graduation courses in English medium.

Odessa State Medical University is one of the largest higher medical universities, a member of European and International Association of Universities, the leader of reformation of medical education in the country. Odessa State Medical University is an higher education institution of the IV (the top level) accreditation level conferred by the State Accreditation Committee of Ukraine (Record No. 12 of June 30, 1994). The University trains specialists of the following qualification levels: Junior Specialist, Specialist, Master (Foreign students included) for the following specialties:

Foreign Students : Foreign students have been studying since 1946. Over 6000 students from Europe, Asia,
Africa, America have got education from this university and are working successfully as doctors in 87 countries of the world. 240 have done specialization and 109 super specialization from OSMU.

The Odessa State Medical University is conducting post graduate courses in 91 specializations. Presently OSMU is the only university in Ukraine, which is offering post graduate courses in different fields of medical science in English medium. Admissions to these courses are open around the year on the availability of seat.

PG courses are clinical training programme, which are conducted in hospitals and clinics under the supervision of guide (teacher). Thus, in order to communicate with the patients and para-medical staff, which is generally Russian speaking; the candidate is taught Russian language during the first six months parallel to PG course. By the end of PG course the candidate has to write a thesis on a particular topic, which is chosen by the candidate with the help of his/her teacher.
