The health care scenario was a matter of great concern to PSG & Sons Charities. Having started a Maternal and Child Care Centre at Vedapatti in 1961, the Charities wanted to do more. In the year 1985, the Trust as its 60th anniversary Diamond Jubilee venture, entered the scene of medical education. The Government was finding it difficult to fulfil the aspiration.

On the 25th January 1926, a Trust under the name and style of P.S.GOVINDASWAMY NAIDU & SON'S CHARITIES came into being to cater to the growing needs of education and industry. Coimbatore opened a new chapter in its history. To understand the genesis, growth and objectives of the trust, it is necessary to travel back in time and visualize the social, educational and economic scenario of India in general and city of Coimbatore in particular.

Illiteracy and poverty afflicted the people, while lack of resources and organized services imposed enormous constraints on the government. The city of Coimbatore, as it exists today with all its industrial and educational houses of excellence, could not even have been dreamt of. The entrepreneurs were yet to arrive while education was meant only for an exclusive few.It needed a benign and active mix of sympathy, daringness, generosity and selflessness to even think of bringing in changes in such a setting.

The four sons of Shri PS Govindaswamy Naidu whose initials the trust bears, had all this in themselves and through their tireless efforts brought forth the trust. They, Shri PSG Venkataswamy Naidu, Shri PSG Rangaswamy Naidu, Shri PSG Ganga Naidu, Shri PSG Narayanaswamy Naidu, the four sons of Shri PS Govindaswamy Naidu, went about setting up the trust in a unique and inimitable fashion. They adopted Charity as their fifth brother and divided their ancestral wealth into, not 4 equal portions, but 5, the fifth one earmarked exclusively for Charity.

They realized that illiteracy caused stagnation, insulating the people from the progressive changes taking place all around and left them poor and uninformed; and hence it was at the root of all the ills of society. Their generous and leadership qualities surged ahead to the fore with this clear sense of understanding of the prevailing malady and its cause. And so, they struck back at illiteracy with a missionary zeal and made education as their primary thrust area. The zeal of idealism continued and many institutions were born in succession in various disciplines.

Over eight decades ago, PSG & Sons' charities was established and is deemed to be the fifth brother of the sons of PSG Govindaswamy Naidu. Right from the beginning, the charities followed a unique approach to serve the community with a vision of providing service through education. The PSG & Sons' Charities Trust is one of oldest charitable organizations dedicated towards empowerment and social change through liberal Arts, Science and Technical education in India.

The Trust started in 1926 is routed in the principles of Gandhism to establish a classless society. Over 3 lakhs students, mostly from economically weaker sections were educated in the institutions of the Trust so far. The educational institutions of the Trust are well known for their academic excellence, providing educational programmes from Kindergarten to Doctoral levels. The Trust symbolizes world class quality education which explains the presence of the Alumni all over the world.

The Government was finding it difficult to fulfil the aspiration of many aqualified and eligible student to enter medicine, in addition to catering quality health care to large sections of people. The Trust, with its decades of track-record and good-will in education and public service, decided to contribute its share in Medical Education.

Thus, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research was born on September 30, 1985. The admission policies and fee structure of the institution correspond to the Government and Judicial requirements of the country. Currently, the annual intake is 100 students for MBBS course.

The institution has been granted recognition by Medical Council of India, General Medical Council of UK and Srilankan Medical Council. The WHO Directory of World Medical Schools lists the institution. Students from this college secure high ranks in the University examination and various competitive examinations held at National and International level like PLAB examination of UK and USMLE.

The institution is highly conscious of its social responsibilities. In fact, the Trust mandates social vision as an essential component of any venture by PSG & Sons Charities. The National Service Scheme finds an active extension and support in our college and it is a forum for our students and staff to interact with community at grass root level and serve their needs.

Frequent medical camps are organized at outlying rural and tribal areas and treatment offered is free. Those requiring admission are brought to the hospital and taken care of. The institution maintains several rural and urban health centres, manned by qualified medical and paramedical personnel. Tribal welfare is top on the agenda and our dedicated medical and paramedical teams frequently visit the tribals inhabiting the remote regions of Nilgiris and Anamalai.

PSG & Sons Charities Trust was born out of munificence of its fore founders, who adopted Charity as their own brother. Recorded history is rare in such events. Started in the year 1926, PSG has spearheaded the fight against illiteracy. Coimbatore of today with education as a dominant force is not how it was then. Sensing that education alone was the magic remedy to many of the social ills of the city and the country, PSG took the first and noteworthy initiative in this direction.

PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research was started in 1985 with the mission of achieving excellence in medical education and health-care delivery. Over the years, our Institution has come to be known for its discipline, high academic standards and overall development of the students. PSG Hospitals, the teaching affiliate to the medical school, offers health care from primary to tertiary levels.

The hospital is most modern, and has all the state-of-the art equipment with highly trained faculty-physicians making appropriate use of them. Our goal now is all geared towards making substantial progress in biomedical research. The Trust stands in full support of all the academic and research efforts of our faculty. I am confident that PSG & Sons Charities Trust with its progressive and professional outlook will scale new heights in the coming years.

PSG & Sons Charities Trust, a charitable organization, is synonymous with Education. Social progress through education has been, is and will be the driving force of this legendary yet dynamic Trust. The Trust came into existence in the year 1926, and over the decades many Institutions of diverse disciplines have blossomed, nurturing the budding aspirations of the youth and nourishing the changing social needs.

PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research was started in 1985, and has been growing steadily since then. The focus here is making of a physician in the most complete form. Medicine has become a highly technology-intensive science but still will have to be practiced in a human-setting.

Therefore, the medical students will have to imbibe human values and ethics. In addition, basic character building that is started in the school will have to continue to make one acquire habits that lead to personal and social success. All these admixed with high-quality academic programs mark our Institution. Students are encouraged to pursue research and present in conferences and seminars. Many of our alumni, placed nationally and globally, have looked back with gratitude and admiration at the dynamic and personalized education that we offer.

  • Developing student-centered, interactive, self-learning educational modules in medical science and medical humanities.
  • Delivering scientifically sound, evidence-based individualized patient care.
