Overview
Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow (India) is a University established under State Act in 1983. The Institute is located on a sprawling 550 acres residential campus at Raebareli Road, 15 km away from the main city. The institute offers its own degrees, which are duly recognized by the Medical Council of India.

The Institute is rated amongst the top medical institutions in the country, delivering state-of-art tertiary medical care, super-specialty teaching, training and research. Dedicated faculty members endeavor to provide quality education, patient care and research and strive to meet the challenges and needs of the society. The Institute offers DM, MCh, MD, PhD, Post Doctoral Fellowships (PDF) and Post Doctoral Certificate Courses (PDCC), and Senior Residency in various specialties. The peers in the field have recognized the courses offered by the Institute and the candidates obtaining degrees from SGPGIMS have been highly placed both within the country and abroad.

Duration of Training:

  • DM and MCh courses are of 3-year duration.
  • PDF and PDCC courses are of one-year duration.
  • All Senior Residents (including DM/MCh candidates) are appointed for a maximum period of 3 years subject to renewal after the satisfactory performance report from their departments at the end of every year.
  • All MD courses are full time and of three-years duration.

Salary:
AllSenior resident are presently being paid Rs. 18,750+Grade Pay of Rs. 6,600/- and other allowances as per rule. PDF candidates are being paid salary equivalent to the third year Senior Resident. All Junior Residents are being paidRs. 15,600+Grade Pay of Rs. 5,400/- and other allowance as per rule.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Students admitted to DM, MCh, PDCC and MD courses are simultaneously appointed as Senior and Junior Residents, respectively. The Institute shall fix duties and responsibilities of all Senior and Junior Residents from time to time. They will be required to perform such work as may be needed in the legitimate interest of patient care, teaching, training and research.

Leave Entitlement:
  • The following leave shall be permissible to the Senior Residents.
  • Casual leave - 8 days in a calendar year.
  • Earned leave - 30 days for each year of service.
  • Medical leave - 20 days on half pay after completion of 1 year of service.
  • The junior residents are permitted a maximum of 31 days leave in the first year and 36 days in the second and third years. Leave for a year cannot be carried forward to the next year.
  • Female residents will be entitled to maternity leave as per rules.
  • Male residents will be entitled for paternity leave as per rules.

The DM/M.Ch/PDCC/Ph.D. courses at SGPGI offer you an opportunity to tackle with real medical and research problems and provide you with a firm grasp of fundamentals and the ability to develop workable solutions. The emphasis is on an integrated teaching program including basic, medical, and surgical specialties. In addition, compulsory and optional courses are organised to provide exposure to areas relevant to all aspects of the medical profession.

There is a strong emphasis on research and training in research methodology in all our postgraduate courses. Our programs recognise that managing innovation and change is fundamental to success. SGPGI's DM/M.Ch./PDCC/MD/Ph.D. programs are based upon the premise that organisations must continually strive to find ways to create values.

Courses:

All students have to complete two compulsory courses (Basic Course and Course on Biostatistics), and two optional courses from among those offered, including Scientific Communication, Clinical Decision Analysis, Research Methodology, Laboratory Instrumentation, Computer Applications, Biomedical Literature Search, Bioinformatics, Basic Immunology, Medical Physics, and Molecular Biology, etc., to be eligible to appear in the final examination.

Research:

Publications in indexed national / international journals is a basic, mandatory requirement for DM and MCh programs. Thesis is a compulsory part of MD programs. The curriculum is designed to integrate the themes of globalisation, quality, comparative advantage, service, change, technology, and historical perspective, and to provide opportunities for the development of interpersonal skills including leadership, oral and written communication and practical applications.

Faculty:

The faculty members at SGPGI include nationally and internationally renowned specialists recognized for their contributions towards advancment of the medical science. They are also recognized for their dedication to excellence in teaching. The faculty combines its work in the frontier areas of medicine and science with a realistic modern view of medicine and brings to the Institute exciting real life perspectives and insight.

Residents:

The residents at SGPGI come from practically every Indian state and form a dynamic community focussing on commitment, initiative, teamwork and leadership.
