Sikkim Manipal University offers quality education to the students from North and North Eastern parts of India.The University was established in accordance with the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act, 1995 (Act No. 9 of 1995); with the aim of imparting exemplary educational opportunities and healthcare services in the State of Sikkim and country wide. It is the first of its kind in the country with a collaboration of private and public sector.t gives me great pleasure to learn that Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) is bringing out its Annual Report 2008-2009.
The Sikkim Manipal University was established in 1995. It is the first government-private initiative in the region. SMU is recognized by the University Grants Commission and approved by the Government of India. Sikkim Manipal University offers quality education to the students from North and North Eastern parts of India. As ranked by Competition Success Review- October 2009, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) ranked amongst top 8th Best University Engineering Colleges of India.SMIT Ranked amongst top 17th Best Engineering Colleges of Excellence in India.SMIT has also bagged 27th rank amongst the Top 50th Engineering Colleges of India.
II am also happy to note that the University has included several new curriculum like M.Tech, Information Technology, Computer Science, Digital Electronics and Advance Communication, Mechanical Engineering, Nanotechnology, B.Tech in Civil Engineering and Applied Electronics, Instrumentation Engineering and Bachelor in Medical Lab Technician. The Central Referral Hospital under SMU has also been equipped with facilities like Dialysis Unit and Central Laboratory which will greatly improve the medical services and benefit the people of Sikkim and also of the neighbouring States.

Welcome to Sikkim Manipal Instutute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS)
Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS), located at Tadong, is a constituent college of the Sikkim Manipal University (SMU). SMIMS offers MBBS, BSc. Nursing and Physiotherapy courses, besides M.Sc Programs in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Physiology and Anatomy. The Central Referral Hospital and STNM Hospital in Gangtok offer clinical training opportunities to students.

India is among the few economies that stood tall during the global financial crisis, the country has built its resilience and is expected to reach a GDP of 8 percent between 2010 and 2015 (NASSCOM 2011). The direct and indirect employment is expected to reach approximately 2.5 million and 8.3 million respectively in the IT-KPO-BPO sector. Further, the Health Ministry estimates India needs 600,000 professional doctors and 2.1 million nurses to maintain a ratio of 1 nurse for a population of 500. The country needs 80,000 beds in hospitals a year over the next 7-10 years to bridge the gap in number of beds as per WHO data.
According to Hewitts 2010-11 study the demand for talent will be on an upsurge. To cater to this overwhelming growth of job creation, the onus is on academia to deliver quality talent as part of the academic supply chain management. Therefore, as a reputed academic institution we are also expected to contribute in enabling qualitative sustainable growth that we have always deeply cherished. Governance and academic excellence has been our hallmark, along with engaged faculty and students it should serve as bedrock that instills a high degree of professionalism fortifying our credibility.
Our focus should continue to be in areas of continuous learning, seamless sharing of knowledge, building best in class technology within the system and finally networking and partnering with the Industry and Government as and when required. We should continue to invest on building a highly technical and capable resource pool of skilled and professional talent.
