Smt. N.H.L. Municipal Medical College was founded in 1963 with capacity of 75 annual admissions, later increased to 150 from 2000. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation was only the second Municipal Corporation - next to Mumbai to establish a medical college of its own. From its humble beginning, it has now blossomed into one of the most advanced and prestigious medical colleges in the country to-day. The objective of the college is not only to produce a good doctor but good citizen with empathy for poor patients.

The college came into being with pious triveni sangam of generous donation of Rs. 14.25 Lakhs from Smt. Nathiba Hargovandas Lakhmichand charitable trust, laudable policy of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to promote medical education and to provide best possible medical care to the citizens of Ahmedabad and the dedication of Dr. M.D. Desai, the then Superintendent of Sheth V.S. Hospital and founder Dean of the college.

The college was inaugurated in 1963 by Mr. Morarji Desai, the then Finance Minister of India at an inaugural function presided over by Dr. Sushila Nayyar, the then Health Minister of India and Mr. Jaykrishna Harivallabhdas, the then Mayor of Ahmedabad. The present premises of the college building was inaugurated in 1975 by Mr. Justice B.J. Divan, Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court.

During the study period of 5 & half years {including 1 year of internship}, emphasis is placed not only on class room and laboratory teaching but also on clinical teaching in wards. Six affiliated teaching hospitals - {1} Sheth V.S. Hospital which is the main hospital located within the campus, {2} Smt. S.C.L. Hospital located at a distance of 5 kms. In Saraspur, {3} Sheth C.H. Nagri Eye Hospital located at a distance of 1 and half kms. near Gujarat College, {4} Infectious Diseases Hospital located at a distance of 1 and half kms. in Jamalpur to-gether have more than 1800 teaching beds where ample clinical material of all varieties is available in abundance.

The college has a well equipped library with around 24,000 books and Medline link and Internet facilities. More than 100 journals in the print / electronic media are being subscribed to. Plans are on anvil to expose the students to Internet surfing by installing computers with telephone connectivity in the students gymkhana.

The inaugural function of the college was kept on 15th June 1963 in Sheth Shri Mangaldas Town Hall. It was inaugurated by then finance minister of India Shri Morarjibhai Desai.The function was also graced by then Health Minister of India Dr. Shushila Nayyar and Shri Jaykrishnabhai Harivallabhdas, then mayor of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

In addition to above mentioned additional to the above mentioned donations, Government of India gave a grant of Rs. 15 lacs for non-recurring expenditure and Rs. 6 lacs for recurring expenditure during the 3rd Five Year Plan. The college started functioning, utilising the building of the Sheth K. M. School of Post Graduate Medicine and Research. The ground floor of this building where at present Surgical OPD of Seth V. S. General Hospital is functioning was the place of the Deans Office and college office.

The 1st 2nd and 3rd floor of this building were utilised by Pathology, Physiology and Anatomy Departments respectively. The present special Rooms-B and Specialty ward No. 14 of Sheth V. S. General Hospital were utilised by Pharmacology and Forensic Medicine Departments. The present ICCU ward was the site of medical college library and lecture hall no. 1 Pediatric Ward 13 was the place of Pathology museum and Lecture Hall No. 2 and 3. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation provided the present magnificent edifice where the college is working at the present, at the cost of Rs. 75 lacs and Justice B. J. Diwan inaugurated this college building on 25th May, 1975. The plan of present building was prepared in accordance with the instructions of Late Dr. M. D. Desai and the college was planned as per his concept of an ideal medical college. To start with in the first year 75 students were admitted for the 1st MBBS course and from 1964 onwards 100 students have been admitted per year in the 1st MBBS course in Smt. N. H. L. Municipal Medical College.

To establish in institution is difficult but to nurture it properly in the early years is still more difficult. Late Dr. M. D. Desai saw to it and from its inception the college established a pattern, which was so perfect and so ideal that the future of the college was sound and clear. He with his foresight coupled with practical wisdom, put the college on firm footing and steered it clear of initial teething troubles. Dr. Desai services and dedication for the college can never be forgotten and words are inadequate to describe it.

LICENSE TO PRACTICE
Smt. N. H. L. Municipal Medical College is recognised by Gujarat University and Medical Council of India. The clinical teaching is imparted to students at following hospitals attached to the college.

  • Sheth V. S. General Hospital
  • Smt. S.C.L. General Hospital
  • Shri C.H. Nagri Eye Hospital
  • Infectious Disease Hospital
In addition to this, students are also sent to Rural Health Centre where the training in community medicine is provided. Right from its inception the college is fortunate to have the services of well-qualified and dedicated teachers. For a college, more important that the building is the quality of teachers. It is not an exaggeration to say that to a very great extent it was the teachers who attracted the best among the bright students to this college for pursuing their medical studies.

The twin combination of inherent brilliance of students and guidance of advice of the dedicated teachers has brought about the best result. The prestige of the college has increased year by year. Many dedicated teachers, some of whom have retired, have contributed to the progress of this institute.
The students are the heart of the college and it is they who keep the college and campus pulsating with life and vigour.

A.M.C. Medical Education Trust has taken up the responsibility of medical education. For taking up this function the people of city of Ahmedabad in general and the medical persons in particular owe a lot of gratitude to the corporation because even though medical education is not one of the compulsory functions of the corporation, But for this noble gesture, hundreds of medicos would have been deprived of their chance to pursue medical studies and obtain medical degrees.

Three big general hospitals and 2 speciality hospitals having almost 2200 beds are attached to college for clinical training. Our students learn from very talented, renowned and successful Physician and basic science faculty and physician Assistant in an environment of cutting edge clinical practice; scientific discovery and scholarly activity.Students who join our college are eligible to complete their U.G. Course (150 anual intack) and can also join the various postgraduate degree and diploma courses.

General Rules and Regulations
Regularity:
Regularity in attending all teaching learning sessions - i.e. lectures, tutorials / group discussions, practicals, clinics, project work, etc. is essential. You must bring journals and study material in lectures and practical classes / dissection. You must wear apron while in the college premises.
The student must have attended minimum 75 % of total theory & practical classes in each term for being eligible to appear at I M.B.B.S. examination.

Internal Evaluation:
You are expected to take all the internal tests / examinations as scheduled. Score from each test / examination contributes to the total internal evaluation marks, both in theory and practicals.

The student must obtain minimum 40 % of total internal evaluation marks in theory & practical separately in all the subjects for being eligible to appear at I M.B.B.S. examination of Gujarat University.

There will be one terminal and the preliminary examination in theory and practicals. The preliminary examination will be based upon the pattern of the University examination. The marks obtained at these examinations will be taken into account while computing the internal evaluation marks for theory and practicals.

Payment of Fees & Dues:
You are expected to pay the college tuition fees, gymkhana fees, other expenditure for course materials and journals and other dues in time as per schedule.

M.B.B.S. Examination:
University examination of I M.B.B.S. will be conducted by Gujarat University after two semesters. The students whose attendance / internal evaluation marks are less than the minimum requisites or who has not paid the requisite college / gymkhana fees will not be sent up for I M.B;B.S. examination till the deficiencies are rectified and the forms will be sent up for the University examination conducted only after the requisite minimum standards are met with.
As per current regulations, maximum four attempts only are permitted at I M.B.B.S. examination.

Accessories:
You should buy the following immediately as they would be required while attending the practicals:
{a} Dissection kit comprising of
{i} Scalpels size 21 2"-3"
{ii} Dissection forceps blunt end and pointed end;
{iii} Knife; {iv} Tooth forceps 6" strong;
{iv} Pen torch &
{v} Probe pointed dissector.

{b} A set of human bones.
{c} Two white aprons full size.
{d} File or note book for writing notes.
{e} Journals for writing notes in practical classes

Discipline:
You must maintain discipline and decorum while in the classes or while dissecting the bodies or in the college or within the college / hospital premises. Students are expected to be polite individually as well as in groups and show respect to all the teaching and non-teaching staff members, patients and cadavers. They are not expected to participate in such activities which harm the academic environment or teacher-student relationship or fellow students. Ragging in any form is not permitted and severe disciplinary action would br taken in case any student is found to indulge in ragging.

Six self addressed post-cards with your name and roll number written should be handed over to the each head of the department within the first week. Your parents will be informed about your progress periodically.

Every student must carry his / her identity card at all times and must produce when demanded.

Extra Curricular Activities:
Extra-curricular activities have a definite place in the life of the students and are supported and encouraged by the college. However, these activities should never be at the expense of time allotted for curricular / academic programmes. Such activities should not lead to absence of students from teaching-learning sessions. Absence from teaching-learning sessions due to participation in such activities not specifically approved / authorized by the University / College will

be treated as unauthorized absence and dealt with accordingly.

Student Teacher Relationship:
A healthy student-teacher relationship goes a long way in the development of students, faculty and also the college. Do not hesitate to bring forth / discuss your genuine problems or to give your suggestions. Feel free to communicate about your difficulties, comments and suggestions to the senior faculty to make the teaching learning process more effective. Please also remember we expect due decorum, due respect to teaching and non-teaching staff members and dnm isciplined behaviour from you while within the premises of the college and hospitals.
