The Stanley Medical College was formed in 1938 in Chennai. In the year 2007, the college was declared 11th out of the 25 medical colleges of India. Run by the Government of Tamil Nadu, the college has both undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses.

The history of Stanley Medical College, Chennai dates back to 1740. The East India Compnay first established a medical department. Later in 1782 Monegar Choultry was built in the present day location of the college. Again the Assistant John Native Infirmary was formed along with the Leper Asylum and Monegar Choultry in 1809. The Native Infirmary started housing a hospital and dispensary from 1830 which was offered by Raja Sir Ramasamy Mudaliar.

The M.B. & G.M. and L.M & S Medical courses were introduced in the Native Infirmary in the year 1836 by the Madras University. East India Company further incorporated a hospital assistant course in the year 1903. Licence for medical practitioners was offered to the college in 1911. In the following years, the Stanley Medical College emphasized on the core development of the infrastructure and courses. Today, the college is one of the prestigious educational institutions of Chenna has introduced modern live surgical transmission from operation theatre to lecture halls using audiovisual gadgets here on Saturday.

The degree and post-graduate students watched live on a screen from the lecture hall, the dissection of a small portion of a body and brain by T.Sivakami, Professor of Anatomy in the laboratory. audio visual facility was provided by the Association of Octolaryngologists of India (AOI), Thanjavur branch. Mohan Kameswaran, noted ENT surgeon handed over the audio visual arrangement on behalf of AOI to Dr.Sivakami.

Dr Mohan Kameswaran said that the alliance between Ear Nose Throat (ENT) and Anatomy is natural. Great ENT specialists remained Anatomy experts.

Stating that those who do well in Anatomy will evolve as a good doctor irrespective of the area the doctors specialised, Kameswaran hoped that the audio visual facility will help students study Anatomy well.

A.Jesudoss, Professor of ENT and Dean (in-charge) of Rajah Mirasudhar Government Hospital said that education with the help of modern audio visual gadgets is the trend.

It is essential to incorporate the modern techniques in the field of education. With that idea, the ENT Department has already got modern live surgical transmission from operation theatre to lecture halls, which is much useful to the students.

The same arrangement is extended to the department of Anatomy today to bring out the virtual reality training to be effective.

This kind of arrangement is not available in any college in South India.

K.Kalaiselvi, Additional Director of Medical edcuation, A.Navaneethan, Dean (in-charge), Thanjavur Medical College, M.K.Balasubramanian, Professor of ENT participated in the programme.

We receive several emails from high school and college students from India and abroad asking us how to apply to the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery) program at Stanley Medical Collge. Stanley Medical College admits about 150 to 165 students every year. This article will tell you all you need to know.

MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) is the title of basic (allopathic) medical degree awarded in India. Applying to the MBBS program is the first step to become a physician, and on successful completion of 4.5 years of coursework (with clinical rotations) and one year of internship, one receives the MBBS degree. This degree allows the holder to register as a licensed medical practitioner with various state medical councils in India and practice medicine throughout India. It also allows one to apply for residency programs for specialty training both in India and abroad.

Stanley Medical College is often the short name for Government Stanley Medical College and Government Stanley Hospital, one of the premier medical colleges and teaching hospitals in India. Stanley Medical College is ranked among the top medical colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu. Currently, admissions to the MBBS program are limited to citizens of India, since medical education is highly subsidised by the government.

There are two ways of applying to the MBBS program. Applicants resident in Tamil Nadu state apply through the Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination (TNPCEE), held every year between March to May. Applicants from outside Tamil Nadu (out-of-state candidates) apply through the All India Premedical/Predental (AIPMPD) Test conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Application in April or May every year.

In-state candidates are also eligible to join SMC through the AIPMPD exam, in addition to the TNPCEE. SMC admits about 150 to 160 students every year to the MBBS program. 85% of these seats are filled through the TNPCEE exam, and 15% through the AIPMPD exam.

Please note that the TNPCEE exam is a common exam for all medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, and successful candidates get the chance choose their medical in the order of their rank in TNPCEE. Since admissions to SMC is highly competitive, the college gets filled within the top 300 ranking candidates in the TNPCEE. Lower ranks in the AIPMPD (compared to the TNPCEE) do get students admitted to SMC, but is equally or more difficult, since AIPMPD is a national level exam with more applicants than the TNPCEE which is a state level exam. Besides, the AIPMPD exam is more difficult than the TNPCEE exam.

Certain percentage of seats are reserved for various underrepresented communities (scheduled castes/tribes, backward castes, etc) in both the AIPMPD and TNPCEE admission categories. Please contact the respective authorities for more information.
