Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara shortened by UMSU is one of the educational institutions owned Persyarikatan Muhammadiyah, functioning education and teaching, research, and community service. UMSU is a private university-government partners in advancing the education sector to create quality human resources in Indonesia is superior, became the nation's dignity and have equal standing with other nations in the world. Muhammadiyah University of North Sumatra was established on February 29, 1957 on the initiative of several prominent scholars among Muhammadiyah Bustami HM Ibrahim, D. Diyar Karim, Rustam Thayib, M. Nur Haitami, Kadarrudin Pasaribu, Dr. Dervish Datuk Big Stone, H. Syaiful UA, Mu'thi and Baharuddin Abdul Latif. UMSU embryo begins with the birth of the Faculty of Philosophy and Islamic Law Muhammadiyah (FAFHIM) which later developed into Muhammadiyah Universities (PTM) of North Sumatra in 1968, with the care of three falkultas namely: Faculty of Science Education (FIP), Department of Religious Studies Faculty of Da'wa (FIAD), and the Faculty of Sharia. At first the establishment of a branch UMSU FIP / FIP class away from Muhammadiyah University Jakarta (UMJ) then broke away in 1974 and stands alone. While FIAD branched into Muhammadiyah University of West Sumatra stand alone by changing its name to the Faculty of Islamic Theology. UMSU today is a follow up of the development of PTM are confirmed with the Charter Incorporation by Muhammadiyah Education and Teaching Council No. 2661/0/07/1974 May 28 , 1974. UMSU the development stage also successfully initiated the birth of several High School Muhammadiyah, such as: (1) STISIP STIH and then after a decree of the Minister of Education RI registered transformed into Tapanuli Muhammadiyah University (UMTS) in Padang Sidempuan. (2) STIE Muhammadiyah Asahan in the range. Currently UMSU is a private university that has the greatest student in Sumatra. UMSU in the year 2005/2006 had as many as 11,751 students who distributed into 7 pieces faculties, including the Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Islamic Religion.
