As a religious social movement, Muhammadiyah was a modern phenomenon established by KH Ahmad Dahlan in Yogyakarta in 1912. The modern characteristics can be seen from three main points; its organized movement, its education activities which reflected modern schools at its time, and technological approach used to develop its organization activities, especially its business affiliation.

To put it simply, the technological approach used relied on its accuracy to analyze the social reality and foresee the future challenges. With the approach, Muhammadiyah has been focusing its attention to human resources development since it was founded as Islamic movement, dakwah and tajdid. Its focus has encouraged Muhammadiyah activists to have strong commitment to establish a university in Yogyakarta, the capital of Muhammadiyah.

The desire to establish the university had existed for long time. In many events, Prof. Dr. Kahar Muzakkir shared his idea of establishing a Muhammadiyah university. When the Central Board of Muhammadiyah, Teaching Division, inaugurated Faculty of Teaching and Education Sciences (FKIP) in Yogyakarta on 18 November 1960, the establishment charter clearly stated that FKIP as a part of a Muhammadiyah university.

In March 1981, with the strong commitment of Drs Mustafa Kamal Pasha, Drs. M. Alfian Darmawan, Hoemam Zainal, SH, Brigjen. TNI (Purn) Drs. H. Bakri Syahid, K.H. Ahmad Azhar Basyir, M.A, Ir.H.M. Basit Wahid supported by the Head of Central Board of Muhammadiyah at that time, K.H.A.R Fakhruddin and the Head of Regional office of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, H.M.
