About University of Algiers
The University of Algiers Benyoucef Benkhedda is located in Algiers, Algeria. The university was founded in 1909 and with seven departments. The Administration department of the University of Algiers (The President's Office, the Calculus Centre), and the Library is located in downtown Algiers, where the major part of the area is used for teaching purposes.

The first higher education established in Algiers is the School of Medical Science. The teaching of medicine was inaugurated in 1833.
The Faculty's of the school of medicine striving for providing the best medical teaching to the students. This task is achieved with the assistance of 4 university hospitals, 11 specialized structures, and 7 health centers of the Algiers. The Medical Sciences of the University of Algiers have 15000 students studying at various undergraduate and postgraduate in the departments of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dental Surgery.

The students, from the outer part of the Algiers or the international student would discover much attention and satisfaction in finding such an environment.

1. Traditional Algiers in such museums as the Musee des Arts Popularizes, the Bardo.
2. Contemporary Algeria, with the historical Museum and the Museum of the Revolution at Riadh El Fath.

Sports and cultural activities:
At the University there are several sports associations. Among them the best association is the Rija association located at Ben Aknoun. It is involved in volley ball, basket ball, football, and swimming. Alternatively, sports facilities are also available at the students' halls.

Health Care:
Health centers and hospitals are arranged for the students who are residing in campuses as well student halls. The Boulevard Amiroucher health center holds a Preventive Medicine unit in addition to a regular health care facility.

Financial Assistance:
The university is providing financial assistance to all students, who have lower income and stronger grades. To achieve this assistance the students should contact the national student services:

Cultural and Sports Activities:
The Cultural and Sports activities Department of ONOU provides all facilities for students to carry out some activities effectively. These sports and cultural activities may carry out in the student residences and other premises only under the guidance of the university.

Prof Elias Zerhouni - Barack Obama's Special Envoy In Science & Technology visits Algiers

Elias Zerhouni received his medical degree at the University of Algiers School of Medicine before coming to America. He completed his residency at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, where he later served as a professor and chairman of the Radiology Department. Zerhouni also has served as a White House consultant to the World Health Organization.

In 2002, Zerhouni was appointed the 15th director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Under his leadership, the agency initiated the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research, established an NIH-wide research initiative to address the obesity epidemic and made health disparities a research priority. Zerhouni stepped down as director in October 2008. He rejoined the faculty of Johns Hopkins University and became a senior fellow in the Global Health program at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

His research has focused on the development of quantitative imaging methods based on CT (computerized tomography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanning to diagnose and treat cancer and pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases. He has 212 publications and holds eight patents.
