Welcome
The University of New Mexico School of Medicine is thrilled that you are considering us for your graduate education. We invite you to begin exploring all of the opportunities available to you at the UNM School of Medicine!

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine was established in 1961 and admitted its first class in 1964. The medical school is located on the north campus of The University of New Mexico which allows students and faculty easy access to the educational, recreational, and cultural offerings of the university.

The School of Medicine has gained national and international recognition for its constantly evolving curricular innovations which are aimed at adapting adult learning theory to medical education.

The UNM School of Medicine has once again ranked second in the nation for its Rural Medicine program in the latest issue of U.S. News & World Best Graduate Schools Report's "America's Best Graduate Schools." The SOM has maintained this national ranking since 1996, underscoring UNM's commitment to programs that serve New Mexico's rural communities. The magazine also ranks the School of Medicine's Family Medicine curriculum 10th in the nation and Primary Care curriculum 33rd. A total of 126 U.S.-accredited medical schools and 20 schools of osteopathic medicine were surveyed for this year's rankings. The schools were ranked according to selected measures of academic quality, including academic reputation, student selectivity, faculty resources, and the percentage of graduating physicians who go into the primary care specialties of family practice, internal medicine and pediatrics.

Five of the School of Medicine departments are ranked in the top 40 National Institutes of Health grant funded departments in the nation including Family & Community Medicine (#15), Neurosciences (#26), Pathology (#33), Neurology (#37) and Internal Medicine (#38).

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine is committed to racial and ethnic diversity with special reference to the inclusion of students from groups that are underrepresented in medicine in the state of New Mexico.

About Us
The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is the largest academic health complex in the state. • UNM Hospitals
  • UNM College of Nursing
  • UNM School of Medicine
  • UNM Cancer Research & Treatment Center
  • UNM College of Pharmacy
  • UNM Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center
Quality and Safety
The University of New Mexico Hospitals (UNMH) serves as the state's only academic medical center, its only Level I Trauma center, and its only certified stroke center. It is also the first choice, and primary source of medical care for thousands of New Mexicans.

At UNMH, we take our commitment to ensuring high-quality healthcare seriously.

This site is designed to show how we are doing as a hospital. In some areas, we are national leaders in patient safety and quality. In other areas, we still have some work to do. Here you will find data on our performance, and some of the steps that we have taken to ensure safe patient care.

We are committed to transparency, and an open discussion of how we are serving the community. We hope that you find these pages informative, and that they help you make better healthcare decisions.

Access
Because UNMH is the state's primary safety net hospital and its sole source of tertiary care, demand for our services is extremely high. UNMH excels at providing high-quality care, gaining access to our services, we recognize, can be difficult.

Over the past year, UNMH has launched several initiatives to improve the timeliness of appointments, care and emergency department, and the availability of transfer beds. Many of these initiatives focus on processing patients more efficiently so that more patients can be seen by our caregivers, and that more of the appointment is spent receiving care rather than doing paperwork. We are pleased to say that in 2011 access to care increased, and wait times decreased. Despite these efforts, we will continue to focus on improving access to our facilities to as many patients as possible.
